Day 365! The End!

Every story has an ending, but every ending is the beginning of something new!

Finally the day came; this is the last day of my 365 Project!

One year ago I was looking at my flickr gallery and all of a sudden I decided to start a 365 project; I had thought about it many times but I never gave it a try; one year ago I didn’t even think about it, I just started when the idea crossed my mind.

I had nothing to do at that time, but I didn’t really think that some days later I was going to be very busy; I didn’t really mind when I realized that, I decided to challenge myself to complete one year of photos, and now, I have achieved it.

I want to thank everyone who has visited, liked and commented my photos in the past year; all of you have encouraged me to go on and keep my eyes wide open to see what I could capture and to find a way to show you the world through my eyes.

Through this year I shot some abstract photos and I asked you what the subject was, I also promised that I was going to post the answers; below you will find the links of the different posts, so that you can see the photos and you will find the answers too:

Some people asked me what I was going to do after this project; truth be told, not another 365, right now I have no enough time for it, but I wanna keep blogging and sharing pictures with you, I was going to open a new blog but I just decided that I’ll do it in this one, I’m not gonna post daily, I’ll do it once i a while, and I wanna involve more something that I really like, the writing.

Por fin llegó el día! Hoy es mi último post para mi proyecto 365.

Hace un año mientras miraba mi ghalería de flickr, tuve un impulso de empezar este proyecto, ya lo había pensado varias veces pero nunca me decidí; esa vez no tuve ni que pensarlo, simplemente lo hice.

No tenía nada que hacer en ese momento, pero no pensé que unos dias despés iba a estar muy ocupado; cuando me di cuenta de eso decidí no parar sino retarme a completar mi año de fotos, y hoy lo he logrado.

Quiero agradecerle a todos los que han visitado, seguido y comentado mi trabajo en este año, cada uno me dió ánimo para continuar y mantener mis ojos abiertos, y así poder mostrarles el mundo que me rodea a través de mis ojos.

A través de este año hice  algunas fotos abstractas donde pedí a la gente adivinar qué era lo que estaba en la foto, y prometí el último día poner las respuetas; abajo están las respuestas, y si dan click en el día, van a encontrar la foto:

Algunas personas me han preguntado qué voy a hacer después de este proyecto; la verdad, no otro igual, ahora no tengo tiempo suficiente para dedicarle a algo tan grande, pero quiero seguir bloggeando y compartiendo algunas demis fotos por aca; pensaba en abrir otro blog nuevo, pero acabo de decidir que voy a seguir usando este, no poniendo fotos cada día sino de vez en cuando, e involucrando más algo que me gusta mucho, la escritura.

Alguien me pidió hacer un Top 10 de mis fotos preferidas, ya lo había pensado desde antes, la decisión no fue facil porque hay varias que me gustan mucho, pero aca les dejo las que más recuedo, sigan los links y ahi las van a encontrar:

Day 364

Since the very first day of this project I’ve been asked about what’s gonna be my last picture of;  at that time I wasn’t  even sure  if I was gonna make it this far,  but it seems that this is going to have a happy ending tomorrow.

So many people told me that I should do a self-portrait for my day 365, I wanted to do one but not for my last day, it just sounded way too predictable; but I didn’t discard the idea. I created one, not for the last day but for the penultimate; here you can see in an abstract way who has been behind the camera this year.

Desde el primer día de este proyecto me preguntan qué voy a hacer para el último día, nunca estuve seguro si iba a llegar tan lejos o no, pero al parecer si!

Muchos me dijeron que tenía que hace un auto retrato, pero eso sonaba muy predecible para mi; obviamente quería hacerlo, pero no como mi foto 365; creo que cuadra bien en el día 364 y aqui pueden ver de una forma abstracta quien es el que estuvo detras de la cámara en este ya casi año.

Day 363

I came across a beautiful parrot today, it was in a big cage and I approached to it to try to get some pictures.

When he saw me he started asking “Quiere cacao?” which means “Do you want cacao?”, that’s funny, almost all the parrots that I’ve seen in my entire life are able to say that; I remember that a couple of months ago, when Veronica and Matias, my friends from Chile came to Colombia, we went to the zoo, there was a sort of parrot section and when we were walking by it, all the parrots were screaming the very same sentence; I have no clue why is it so famous among the parrot world.

When I got close to the cage, the parrot approached to the camera and tried to bite the lens, then stepped back and asked me again if I wanted cacao; I laughed and it seems he didn’t like it very much because as soon as he heard me laughing, he quickly approached to bite the lens and then walked away from me.

It took me a long time taking this shot, I took over 30 of this kind but the most of them weren’t in focus; this one is the one I liked the most; I got it when a kid came close and started talking to the parrot, the animal stood completely still and stared at the kid, that gave me the chance to get this one.

Hoy me encontré con un loro que estaba en una jaula muy grande, me acerqué a él  para intentar hacer unos acercamientos.

Apenas me vio me preguntó “Quiere cacao?”, es raro, la mayoría de loros que he visto en toda mi vida dicen esa frase; hace unos meses cuando Verónica y Matias, mis amigos de Chile vinieron, fuimos al zoologico y en la sección donde están los loros escuchamos esa frase de casi todos ellos. No tengo ni idea qué tiene de especial esa frase que la hace tan común en el mundo de los loros.

Cuando me acerqué a la jaula y puse el lente cerca, el loro se acercó e intentó morder el lente, luego se alejó y me preguntó otra vez si quería cacao, me reí y al parecer no le gustó porque apenas escuchó mi risa vino rápido a intentar morder el lente otra vez.

Me tomó un buen tiempo y mucho trabajo poder tomar esta foto, porque a parte de que el loro quería morder el lente, se movía de un lado a otro, lo que hacía que el enfoque, totalmente manual, fuera imposible; por fortuna un niño se acercó a la jaula y empezó a hablarle al loro, que parecía hipnotizado y se quedó quieto en la posición perfecta, ese era el momento perfecto para hacer click!

Day 362

Another week is getting started today, but this one is special to me, is the last week of my project and although I’ll be very busy studying for some exams, I’ll try my best to shoot good photos for the last days of this project.

Today I wanted to compose something that involved lines, I didn’t know what I could use for it; later on I found a blue crowned motmot’s feather in my drawer; I found that feather a couple of months ago in the university; I’ve been collecting different feathers that I’ve found, specially the colorful ones and I see that they can be interesting subjects.

Otra semana empieza, pero esta es una semana especial para mi, es la semana final de este proyecto, y aunque voy a estar muy ocupado estudiando para exámenes voy a hacer mi mayor esfuerzo para que las últimas fotos sean muy buenas.

Hoy quise componer algo con lineas, no sabía qué usar para esto, pero en mi cajón encontré una pluma de un barranquero que encontré hace unos meses en el suelo de la universidad; ultimamente he esztado coleccionando plumas que encuentro, sobre todo si son coloridas, y ya veo que son interesantes para hacer fotos y componer con ellas.

Day 361

This was today’s sunset; it was really unexpected because the day had been cloudy and a bit chilly, but all of a sudden the sky turned completely red.

I made a  sequence of the sun going down and took some others focusing only on the sun and on the clouds; but when I looked at the sequence, there was one that I really liked and is this one.

Así fue el final de este día; el atardecer fue super inesperado porque el día estuvo muy nublado y un poco frio, pero de un momento a otro el cielo empezó a tornarse rojo por el sol.

Hice una secuencia del sol mientras se ocultaba, otras fotos de las nubes y otras sólo del sol; pero cuando miré la secuencia, hubo una que me gustó en particular  y fue esta.

Day 360

It’s been a rainy day in Pereira and I’m kind of sick, so today’s shot is taken at home.

When I walked into the kitchen I found the windows covered with rain; as it already had stopped raining, I approached to open the windows and immediately noticed the reflection of the city on the rain drops.

I tried very hard to capture a sharp photo if one of them, I spent more than 30 minutes in the kitchen and got almost 70 photos, but only 5 of them were decent; the focus is completely manual and is not easy to get the reflections because if you move one millimeter, it will be completely out of focus.

This was my favorite from today.

Hoy ha sido un día de nubes y lluvia en Pereira, y como no me siento muy bien la foto de hoy fue hecha en casa.

Cuando entré a la cocina vi las ventanas llenas de gotas de lluvia, como ya había escampado fui a abrirlas y mientras me acercaba noté el reflejo de la ciudad en las gotas.

Intenté sacar una foto nítida de una de ellas con el reflejo, estuve más de 30 minutos en la cocina y tomé casi 70 fotos, pero de esas sólo 5 me gustaron; el enfoque es completamente manual y esto hace muy dificil captar el reflejo, pues sólo moverse un milímetro causa que el reflejo se desenfoque 100%.

Esta fue mi favorita de hoy.

I have no idea what’s the name of this plant but I really like how it looks like and how vibrant its colors are.

Somehow it reminds me on when I was in the school and I had chemistry class, it pretty much looks like hydrogen bonds.

No tengo ni idea de qué  planta es esta, no se su nombre, ni nada sobre ella pero me encanta como se ve y lo vivo de sus colores.

De alguna manera me recuerda el colegio, las clases de química porque se me parecen mucho a los “puentes de hidrógeno” que ahi se ven.

Day 357

Today I found a glasswing butterfly, one of those that have transparent wings and are not easy to find.

I looked up some info about this kind of butterflies and while doing it I realized that it’s been a long time since I last wrote a post with different facts about my subject, so I decided to share some interesting facts that I found about these creatures:

The glasswing butterfly lives only in Latin America. Its distribution ranges from the country of Panama up into parts of Mexico, they can be found in Venezuela and Colombia as well.

Their transparent wings provide camouflage against predators, and allow them to go unnoticed in their habitat, particularly while feeding.

These butterflies reside in tropical rain forest areas.

Adults glasswing butterflies are assumed to be toxic, but their toxicity results from males feeding on flowers whose nectar contains alkaloids. These same alkaloids also are converted into pheromones by the males and used to attract females.

Glasswing butterflies can carry up to 40 times their body weight.

Their top speed is about 12 km per hour.

Hoy encontré una mariposa de alas transparentes, comunmente se les conoce como mariposas de cristal o espejitos y son muy dificiles de encontrar.

Investigué un poco sobre ella en internet, y me di cuenta que hacía mucho tiempo no hacia una entrada con datos o información acerca de lo que hay en mi foto, así que quise volver a hacer uno para compartirlo con ustedes; aca van algunos datos sobre este insecto:

La mariposa de cristal vive solamente en Latinoamérica. Su habitat va de Panamá hasta México, pero también se pueden encontrar en Colombia y en Venezuela.

Sus alas transparentes le proveen camuflaje contra sus predadores, y les permite pasar desapercibidas en su habitat especialemnte mientras se alimentan.

Este tipo de mariposas solo vive en bosques de lluvia tropical.

Los adultos son tóxicos, y su toxicidad se debe principalmente a que los machos se alimentan de las flores cuyo néctar contiene alcaloides. Estos mismos alcaloides se convierten en feromonas que los machos usan para atraer a las hembras.

Las mariposas de cristal pueden llevar hasta 40 veces el peso de su cuerpo.

Su velocidad máxima es de 12 km. por hora.

I experimented a bit with the reversing ring, the light and the white balance; I got over 20 shots but the ones I liked the most were these two, I couldn’t decide which one was my favorite, and as I’m about to finish this project, I didn’t want to limit myself to post only one photo if there are two that I like.

Also, it had been a while since the last time I did something abstract and I wanted to try it again.

Hoy expermienté un poco con el anillo de reversa, la luz y el balance de blancos; tomé más de 20 fotos pero estas dos me gustaron mucho, y no pude decidir cual me gustaba más.

Aasí que como estoy a punto de terminar este proyecto, decidí no limitarme a una sola foto si hay más de una que me gusta.

Yesterday evening I noticed that something changed at home when I came back from my uncle’s house, but I was too tired to realize what it was.

Later on, I noticed that my mom painted one of the walls; she had already told me that she wanted to do some changes and she bought a paint a couple of weeks ago, I disliked a lot the one she bought, it looked too pale and that’s not her style, I was expecting something more alive, fortunately, she didn’t use that one.

When I realized that she had painted the dinner room wall, I turned the lights on to see how it looked like and I liked it, but I had to wait until today to see how it was gonna be like with the day light.

I actually liked it, it’s such a big change for us since the only non-white walls of this apartment were in my room, and now, home looks more alive!

Ayer en la noche noté que había algo diferente cuando volví de la casa de mi tio, pero estaba muy cansado y no le presté la suficiente atención.

Después de un rato de descanso vi que mi mamá había pintado la pared del comedor; ya me había dicho que quería hacer unos cambios y hace unas semanas había comprado una pintura que no me gustó, me parecía muy pálida y sabía que ese no era el estilo ni de ella ni de nadie en esta casa, por fortuna no fue esa la que utilizó.

Cuando me di cuenta que lo que había cambiado había sido el color de la pared, prendí la luz para ver qué tal había quedado, estaba un poco ansioso porque sin verla con luz no sabía cual era el tono.

Me gustó en ese momento, pero tenía que esperar hasta hoy para estar seguro viéndola a la luz del día; mi opinión no cambió, el apartamento se ve diferente, pues desde que vivimos aca la única pared de la casa que ha tenido color ha sido la de mi cuarto, y ahora esta. Es un gran cambio y la casa se ve mucho más viva.

This weekend I went to my uncle’s house to rest because the upcoming week isn’t gonna be easy at all, so I needed to relax a lot and do nothing, and truth be told that’s what I did.

Usually when I visit my uncle’s house, no matter who I go there with, I always take long walks and this time my walks didn’t last more than 30 minutes; but anyways, I got to see a lot, different birds, insects, flowers, landscapes, sunsets and so on, and spent time with some good friends, so there is nothing to complain at.

I guess a weekend of laziness was necessary.

Este fin de semana fui a la casa de mi tio para descansar; necesitaba unos dias para relajarme y no hacer nada, y así fue.

Normalmente cuando voy alla salgo a caminar y puedo hacerlo por horas y horas, pero esta vez la caminata más larga duro alrededor de media hora. A pesar de eso y de toda la pereza que hice durante este fin de semana, alcancé a ver muchas cosas como diferentes tipos de pájaros, flores, paisajes y atardeceres, además estuve acompañado por buenos amigos.

Un fin de semana de descanso y pereza era muy necesario.

I found this little insect in the university and when I saw it I fell in love with its colors.

It looks so different to all the insects that I’d seen before and looks like it’s painted, that’s why it caught my attention.

I’m not going to post in the next days because tomorrow I’ll go out of the city and aside my camera I’m sure I’m not gonna have any contact with technology, so, hope you all have a great weekend!

Encontré este insecto en la universidad y apenas lo vi me enamoré de sus colores.

Es un insecto completamente diferente a todos los que había visto alguna vez, parece pintado, y por eso llamó mi atención.

En los próximos dias no voy a publicar nada porque mañana me voy unos dias, y a parte de mi cámara, no voy a tener ningún contacto con la tecnología, así que hasta el domingo que vuelva.

I’ve passed by this building thousand times in my life, there are different things that get reflected on it, but only lately I noticed how on one of its sides the city is reflected.

So, lately I’d been wanting to take this picture but I really don’t like walking in the street with my camera, and as there is a lot of traffic in this part of the city, stopping to shoot isn’t that easy, but today I gave it a try, and I was very lucky because there were no cars at that time, therefore I could stop and take different shots with both of my lenses.

Por este edificio he pasado miles de veces y siempre noto los reflejos de árboles, del cielo y de alguna calle en él, pero iltimamente en uno de sus lados vi como se reflejaba parte de la ciudad.

Hace unos dias había querido tomar esta foto, pero no me gusta salir de la casa caminando con la cámara, y el lugar desde donde se puede tomar es un sitio en el que hay mucho tráfico, así que es dificil parar.

Hoy salí decidido a tomarla, y por fortuna, no venía ningún carro, así que pude parar y tomar varias fotos, incluso con los dos lentes.

Contrary to what I expected, it didn’t rain today, the weather was actually good, a bit chilly in the morning but the afternoon was sunny and kind of warm too.

So, I didn’t experiment anything with rain drops, but I used some water for today’s shot.

I placed some drops on a glass and my intention was reflecting a wooden box painted by my sister a couple of months ago; this was the outcome of the experiment.

Contrario a lo que pensé ayer, hoy no llovió; a decir verdad, el clima estuvo bueno, un poquito frio en la mañana pero por la tarde estuvo soleado y caliente; así que no pude experimentar con gotas de lluvia.

Pero si pude experimentar con agua; puse algunas gotas sobre un vidrio y traté de reflejar una caja de madera que pintó mi hermana hace unos meses; este fue el resultado del experimento.

Day 348

I don’t know how a hurricane is like, but after the storm that we had today here, I don’t ever want to experience it.

It didn’t rain, it poured; the wind knocked down different things in the city; the storm caused harm to trees, traffic signs and roofs; it was quite scary because the wind was blowing pretty hard and I thought that the windows were going to fall down as well, but fortunately it didn’t happen.

After all the storm, I managed to get this shot, a beautiful flower with some rain drops; all the bad things come with some good.

No se cómo es un huracán, pero después de lo que se vivió hoy en la ciudad, nunca quisiera experimentarlo.

No llovió, diluvió; el viento tumbó muchas cosas en la ciudad, la tormenta causó daños en árboles, techos, señales de tránsito, pasacalles; fue increible ver como el viento se llevaba sombrillas y las elevaba; era tan fuerte que pensé que las ventanas del apartamento se iban a caer, pero por fortuna no fue así.

Ahora la ciudad está llena de neblina, y parece que el clima no va a estar muy bueno mañana; pero un poquito de lluvia podría ser buena para hacer experimentos fotográficos; aunque sólo un poquito, no
algo como lo de hoy.

Although I’ve been away and haven’t had much time left to post, I’ve been taking pictures every day and finally I got some time to upload them.

I’ve been experimenting a bit with different things, the second picture is something I’d wanted to do for a long time and finally I decided to give it a try; I liked the outcome but I need to experiment some more, I have some ideas in my mind and we will see when they are going to become pictures.

Aunque no he tenido mucho tiempo para subir fotos, las he estado tomando y por fin pude sacar un rato para desatrazarme aca.

He estado experimentando un poco, haciendo algunas fotos que he querido hacer por un largo tiempo, y por fin hoy me decidí a hacerlas; estoy hablando de la segunda foto, no fue facil pero valió la pena la espera y el tiempo invertido en ella, además fue una experiencia divertida; aunque quiero experimentar más con este tipo de fotos, ya tengo algunas ideas en mente pero ya veremos cuando las puedo llevar a cabo.

Today when I finished classes, a good friend called me to tell me that some snow caps were visible at that time, I looked for a place where those snow caps were visible from and when I got there it was too dark already; I got to take some photos, one of them was decent but not whorty of upload becuase is too noisy, I had to bump the ISO up to 6400.

When I was walking to get to the place where I could see the snow caps from, I got this picture, I liked how these two towers look like against the beautiful sunset that we had today.

Hoy cuando terminé clase, recibí una llamada de una amiga para avisarme que los nevados se podian ver facilmente debido a que el cielo estaba despejado.

Eera un poco tarde pero intenté llegar a un punto desde el cual pudiera verlos; cuando llegué ya estaba muy oscuro, se veian, pero no era facil tomarles fotos.

Lo hice, saque una decente, pero ninguna para publicar, todas tienen mucho ruido porque subí el ISO a 6400.

Mientras subía al lugar desde el cual los nevados se veian, alcancé a capturar esta foto, me gustó como las dos torres se ven contra el atardecer que estuvo espectacular.

Day 342

Today in the marketing class we were shown some pictures by an Argentinian photographer, I have no idea what was the purpose of the teacher, but of course, I didn’t complain at all because I was very entertained; the pictures were amazing and quite inspiring.

When I got home, I was exhausted and went to the balcony for a second; there was a fly giving birth, I really don’t know if seeing that was amazing or rather disgusting, but anyways, I picked my camera up and shot some macros of the fly that was completely still; later on I remembered the pictures that we saw in the marketing class and I grabbed an atomizer to spray a bit of water on the fly; in one of those pictures we saw there was a firefly with lots of water drops on its eyes and the drops enhanced a lot the details, I tried to get the something similar, and I got quite pleased with the result.

When I got the pictures in the computer, I chose my favorite one, and I experimented a bit with it; the second picture is the outcome of my experiment.

Hoy en la clase de mercados, la profesora puso una presentación con unas fotos tomadas por un fotógrafo argentino; no tengo idea cual era la intención pero yo no podía quejarme porque estaba muy entretenido viéndolas, eran increibles y tenian mucha técnica.

Cuando llegué a la casa estaba exhausto y me fui al balcón un rato a descansar; alla encontré una mosca poniendo sus larvas, no se si ver eso fue algo increible o más bien desagradable, pero de todos modos me fui a buscar la cámara y tomé algunas fotos de la cara de la mosca que no se movía en lo absoluto.

Después recordé una de las fotos que nos mostraron en clase, en ella había una libélula con gotas de agua en su cara, así que busqué un atomizador para rociar la mosca con un poco de agua y mirar si podía sacar algo parecido; me gustó el resultado, sobre todo la forma en la que las gotas resaltan el detalle de los hexágonos en los ojos.

Cuando las pasé al computador escogí mi favorita, y empecé a jugar con ella en photoshop; la segunda imagen es el resultado de mi experimento, creo que nunca había subido algo así y decidí acompañar la imagen original con mi experimento.

The little boy that you see in the first picture is the son of a good friend of mine who I studied english with.

Yesterday her son, Samuel, had his birthday party, he turned 3 years old this week and it was a good occasion to meet up. I shot some pictures of him while he was playing in the playground; truth be told I’m not an expert in portraits, I think they are not easy at all, but I liked this one, I even liked how the painted wood frames him.

El niño que ven en la primera foto es el hijo de una buena amiga, con quien estudié inglés hace unos años.

Ayer, su hijo Samuel, celebró su tercer cumpleaños y fue una buena ocasión para volver a verla. Mientras el jugaba en el parque alcancé a tomar unas fotos de él, desde lejos porque al principio no quería que le tomara fotos; no soy un experto en retratos, me parecen muy dificiles pero me gustó este, y me gustó como la madera del parque enmarca su cara.

This little camera that you see here was the first camera that I bought with my own money, I was like 12 years old and I wanted to have a camera to take with me to the school; my parents told me that I should save more money and get a better one, but as soon as I saw this one, I fell in love with it.

It’s dimensions are 56x56x15 millimeters, quite small, when one of my teachers at school first saw it he thought it was a pencil sharpener with the shape of a camera, and he told me that I was quite obsessed with photography.

The quality of the pictures was really bad, but I didn’t know anything about photography at that time and all I wanted was having a camera to capture different moments with my friends at school and family; I was also really obsessed with this camera because the face plate could be changed for a different one with different colors; I still have the 7 of them, the orange one that you see in the picture, and some others; for a 12 years old guy it was very cool.

Nowadays that I know more about photography I know that this camera wasn’t a great choice, but I really don’t regret having had it because this little camera made me want to get a better one and learn more and more about photography.

Esta pequeá cámara fue la primera que compré con mi propia plata, tenía casi 12 años y mis papas me decían que mejor esperara para comprar algo mejor, pero yo quería una en ese momento y no podía esperar más, además, vi esta y me encantó por su tamaño y facilidad de llevar a todas partes.

Mide 56 x 56 x 15 milimetros, es muy pequeña, algún día un profesor del colegio la vio y pensó que era un sacapuntas y que yo estaba obsesionado con la fotografía.

La calidad de las fotos era pésima, ya entiendo porque me decían que esperara, pero igual en ese momento no sabía nada de fotografía y lo único que quería era tomar fotos de mis amigos y familia.

“La camarita” como le deciamos, tenía 7 cubiertas de diferentes colores, la naranja que ven aca, una azul, otra verde, morada, roja, plateada y café, el sólo hecho de tener esa posibilidad de cambiar de colores era algo increible para un niño de 12 años y me hacía sentir tener a razón en cuanto a no esperar para comprar una cámara mejor.

Obviamente ahora sabiendo algo más de fotografía, se que fue una decisión apresurada, pero no me arrepiento en lo absoluto de haberla tenido porque fue en cierto modo la que me hizo querer tener una camara mejor y aprender cosas nuevas cada vez más.

I went to the botanical garden with the intention of finding a green toucan that I saw yesterday in the university; of course it was a silly idea because toucans are usually on the top of the trees and it was gonna be almost impossible to find one, so I wasted my time in the search of the bird.

But anyways, I got to shoot different pictures that I was quite pleased with; when I was about to leave, I shot this one, I didn’t like it that much when I saw it in the camera, but then, when I saw it here I found something magical and charming about it, I don’t know if it has something to do with the silhouettes or perhaps with the sun light coming through the forest; also this shot is different to every picture I’ve posted, that’s why I found it interesting.

Hoy fui al jardín botánico con la intención de encontrar un tucán verde, ayer encontré uno en la universidad y pensé que por el verano podría encontrar uno facilmente; pero normalmente los tucanes están en las copas de los árboles y encontrar uno iba a ser casi imposible, así que por ese lado, perdí el tiempo.

Pero aun así, alcancé a tomar diferentes fotos que me gustaron y con las que estaba contento; cuando estaba a punto de salir tomé esta, al principio la vi muy normal, pero cuando la vi grande en el computador me gustó, encontré algo mágico en ella por sus siluetas y la luz del sol filtrándose por las guaduas; además la vi muy diferente a todo lo que he tomado alguna vez, pero eso me pareció interesante.

A bit more than one year ago I found such a strange creature here at home, I wasn’t really sure what it was, I tried to find out something about it, I wasn’t sure if it was a butterfly or a moth, but it looked different to all the animals that I’d seen before. The pattern on its wings was really catchy.

It left and I never saw it anymore until today, the insect appeared again in the very same place that it did last year; I did a “photo-shoot” with it trying different angles, and then I captured a decent picture of its face; this was the outcome.

Hace un poco más de un año encontré en mi casa un animal muy extraño, nunca supe qué era exactamente, era algo que nunca habíua visto y podía ser tanto una mariposa como una polilla; le tomé fotos, luego se fue, y la duda nunca fue resuelta. Era diferente, sus alas eran muy bonitas y cautivantes.

Hoy volvió a aparecer exactamente en el mismo lugar en el que estaba hace más de un año; practicamente le hice un foto estudio intentando ángulos diferentes al que había logrado antes, y pude hacer un acercamiento decente de su cara; éste fue el resultado.

My  mom came back from her holidays 2 days ago and today I saw a bracelet she bought in the coast; as soon as I saw it I was drawn by its colors. I grabbed it and I used my reversing ring to get some macros of the tiny beads that the bracelet is made of.

These were my favorites, and I couldn’t decide which one I liked the most and therefore I’m posting both of them.

Mi mamá volvió de sus vacaciones hace dos dias y hoy vi que trajo algunas pulseras que compró; hubo una que en particular me gustó y me llamó la atención por sus colores. La usé hoy para hacer unas fotos usando el anillo de reversa y así magnificar el detalle de las “chaquiras” de las que está hecha.

Estas dos fueron mis favoritas, no pude elegir entre ellas cuál me gustaba más.

Today I met up with a friend in the social area of the building where I live; we were going to practice a bit our presentation until we were confident with it; some minutes later, I noticed a nest very close to where we were sitting and there was a turtle dove  in it, I imagined that she was sitting on her eggs and later on she flew away for a while; we got closer to the nest and got to see 2 eggs there.

Afterwards, the bird came back, and I could get close enough to take some pictures of it; these are the ones I liked the most.

Hoy me reuní con una amiga en la zona social del edificio, para practicar nuestra exposición hasta que sintieramos nos sintieramos confiados en lo que ibamos a decir; después de un vi un nido y una tórtola en él; me imaginaba que estaba sentada sobre huevos.

Más tarde la tórtola se fue y nos acercamos al nido, efectivamente habían dos huevos; la tórtola volvió y me pude acercar lo suficiente para tomarle algunas fotos; estas dos fueron las que más me gustaron.

Día 335, ahora sólo falta un mes!

The second photo is a sax, I was taking a photo of it and then I thought about getting it out of focus to see how the result would be like, and I was quite happy with it.

Ya estoy de regreso en la universidad y por eso no tengo mucho tiempo libre, pero como queda tan poco tiempo para que este proyecto termine voy a hacer mi mejor esfuerzo para poder postear a diario, pero estoy casi seguro que habran dias en los que aunque tome fotos, no voy a tener el tiempo de subirlas, y por eso lo haré tan pronto pueda.

La segunda foto – Dia 330 – es un saxofón, estaba tomando una foto de él y luego pensé en cómo se vería totalmente desenfocado, lo intenté y me quedó gustando el resultado.

My intention was creating a picture relaxing to look at, some kind of calm atmosphere, and after experiment with different things, I got this shot. I liked the clarity on the drop and how it completely changed the color of the background.

I used to dislike flowers, I didn’t like anything about them; but photography has made me realize that there is something charming about them, their colors, the variety, all the different shapes that they have.

No me gustaban las flores, nada de ellas, pero a través del lente de la fotografía y el lente de la cámara encontré otro lado de ellas, pude ver algo diferente y fascinante en sus colores, su variedad, y todas las diferentes formas que tienen.

Sobre esta flor, no tengo ni idea que tipo es, nunca la había visto, pero me encantaron sus colores.

I’m back in the coffee area and things are going back to normal.

I found a new bag of coffee at home, and I opened it to shoot some photos of the beans.

I spread them on the dinner table because the sun was shining on it, I didn’t realize that I opened the bag a little bit too much and I spilled almost all the beans; I’m sure that someone is not gonna be too happy about it but I enjoyed and had fun while composing this picture.

Primer día de regreso en la zona cafetera, y todo vuelve a la normalidad.

Hoy encontré una bolsa de café en mi casa, y decidí abrirla para tomar fotos de los granos.

Los puse en la mesa del comedor porque ahi les daba la luz del sol; no me di cuenta que había abierto la bolsa un poco más de lo debido, y por eso regué casi todo el contenido de la bolsa. Estoy seguro que hay alguien que no va a estar muy contento con eso, pero bueno, disfruté componiendo esta foto.

I’m back from my trip. This has been a week to relax and spend time with family and friends that live in Bogotá, the capital.

What I like the most about this city is the weather, it’s cold and that makes it very different to Pereira; there are also so many cultural activities to attend to. What I dislike is the big size of the city and how the traffic makes distances even longer.

Some info about Bogotá:

Bogotá  remains to be the largest and the most populated city in Colombia.

Its high altitude of 2640 meters above the sea level, has given it the position of the third highest major city in the world.

The city average temperature is 14°C , varying from 9ºC to 22ºC.

It was founded in 1538.

Bogotá houses the Festival Iberoamericano de Teatro, the biggest theater festival in the world every two years.

In 2011, Bogotá was inhabited by 10.763.453 people.

Ya estoy de regreso de mi viaje, fue una semana de mucho descanso y de estar con mi familia y amigos que viven en Bogotá, la capital.

Lo que me gusta de la ciudad es su clima, es frio y esto la hace muy diferente a Pereira, el cambio de ambiente que tanto quería lo conseguí facilmente;además en Bogotá ofrece muchas actividades culturales. Lo que no me gusta es que debido a su tamaño las distancias son muy largas, y el tráfico las hace aun más largas.

Algo de información sobre Bogotá:

Su altura de 2640 metros sobre el nivel del mar, le ha dado el lugar de la tercera apital más alta del mundo.

When I left my building for going to the gym, I saw a very beautiful tree that I had not noticed before just in front of the main door; but I’ve posted a photo of this kind of tree before, so I didn’t have any intention of taking photos of it. Later on I went out with my parents and on our way back, I noticed the “carpet” made by the flower that had fallen from the tree, so I grabbed the camera and got off the car to take a couple of photos of it.

This is probably my last post for this week, I’ll be traveling and I’m not really sure if I’m gonna have time to be posting, but as soon as I can I’ll do it.

Hoy salí del edificio y vi un árbol lleno de flores amarillas, un guayacán que no había notado antes; como ya he tomado muchas fotos de ellos no tenía ninguna intención de volver a hacerlo; más tarde salí con mis papas y cuando volvimos noté la “alfombra” hecha por las flores que habían caido del árbol, así que saqué la cámara y tomé un par de fotos.

Este es probablemente el último post de esta semana, mañana voy a viajar y no estoy seguro si voy a tener tiempo de subir algo, pero tan pronto pueda lo voy a hacer.

Today I visited my aunt; she is an artist and she has a really different and cool house decorated with some of her work.

She’s been doing different mosaics in the walls, but there is one that I really love, is this one, it ain’t colorful at all as the other ones, but it’s really different to all that you see; she made this with things that she’d been recycling for a while such as spoons, calculator keys, old tools, scissors, etc. I think this is one of the nicest parts of her house.

When I came back and saw all the pictures, I liked this one because all the lines of the walls are somehow framing the mosaic.

Probably I’ll be back some time soon to take more pictures and show you how the house of an artist like her looks like.

Hoy visité a mi tía un rato, ella es una artista y tiene una casa muy diferente e interesante que ella misma se ha encargado de decorar y adecuar a su estilo.

Ella ha hecho muchos mosaicos en las paredes, pero este es uno d elos que má me gusta, no tiene nada de color como los otros, pero es mágico y no es algo que se encuentre en alguna parte; lo hizo con cosas que recicló durante un tiempo, hay desde herramientas viejas, cucharas, tijras, hasta teclas de teléfonos y calculadoras.

Cuando volví a mi casa y vi las fotos, quedé contento con esta por todas las lineas de las paredes, que en cierto modo encuadran el mural.

Creo que pronto voy a volver a tomar más fotos del lugar, para que puedan ver cómo es la casa de una artista.

This is the tallest building in my city, it really can’t be compared to the skyscrapers in the States or even in cities like Bogotá or Medellín, but that’s what we’ve got here in Pereira.

I was driving and I stopped because the traffic light was red, while I was waiting I noticed the reflection of the sky in the building’s glasses, so I grabbed camera quickly and shot before the traffic light changed to green; I probably hadn’t as many time as I wanted to compose it differently and to try other angles, but I have to say that I was really pleased with the outcome, specially because of the symmetry.

Este es el edificio más alto de mi ciudad, no se puede comparar con los edificios que hay en Estados Unidos, incluso en Bogotá o Medellín, pero es lo que tenemos en Pereira.

Mientras manejaba, tuve que parar en un semáforo cerca a este edificio, desde ahí pude observar los reflejos del cielo en sus vidrios, así que saqué la cámara rápido y tome unas fotos antes de que el semáforo cambiara a rojo; no tuve suficiente tiempo para pensar en composiciones y encuadrar de formas diferentes, pero tengo que admitir que me gustó el resultado, especialmente por la simetría.

Today I was organizing my drawers, I started finding different things that had to be thrown away,some others that I decided to keep, and then I found a small box that I didn’t really remember; when I opened it, I found these red seeds and they brought so many memories back to me.

I remember that I used to go to a place where there were lots of trees, and these seeds were hanging from them; I used to pick them from the grass and bring them home; there was a time where I used them to make necklaces to give as presents for christmas to my mom, sister, aunts and grandma. I didn’t remember that I still had them.

Hoy mientras organizaba mis cajones empecé a encontrar cosas que tenía que botar, otras que quería guardar y no había visto en un tiempo, y de repente encontré una caja pequeña qu e no recordaba, cuando la abrí, encontré unas semillas que me trajeron algunos recuerdos de hace un tiempo.

Cuando era pequeño iba mucho a un lugar con muchos árboles, y estas semillas colgaban de ellos; yo las recogía del suelo, las guardaba y las tría a la casa, siempre traía una bolsa grande con muchas de ellas; y en algun momento las usé para hacer collares para dar regalos de navidad a mi mamá, hermana, abuela y tias. No sabía que aun tenía algunas.

First day of holidays! I slept long, not as long as I wanted but I rested and didn’t wake up thinking about either exams or assignments; I went for a work out, I ran some errands and took some pictures.

In the afternoon, when I was leaving for the shopping mall to buy some stuffs, my dad was arriving and he joined me, I spent part of my day with him and when we came back, he opened the door and the light shining on our home was kind of blinding, I was surprised with that amount of light because I had never seen something like this here; a couple of minutes later the light dwindled and I shot a panorama from the main door.

I think spaces are really hard to photograph, and I’d tried it just a few times, but I liked the result today.

Primer día de vacaciones, dormí mucho, no tanto como quería pero al menos descansé y me levanté sin pensar en examenes ni trabajos; fui a hacer ejercicio, hice unas vueltas y tomé fotos.

En la tarde, cuando estaba a punto de irme al centro comercial a comprar algo, me crucé con mi papá y el me acopañó; pasamos parte de la tarde juntos; cuando volvimos a la casa, el abrió la puerta y la luz que había era impresionante, nunca había visto el apartamento tan iluminado como hoy, la luz era casi cegadora, pero todo se veía más bonito. Después de un tiempo, la luz bajó un poco, y decidí hacer una panorámica de la casa desde la puerta.

Creo que las fotos de lugares o espacios cerrados son muy complicadas, sólo las he hecho muy pocas veces, pero el resultado de hoy, me gustó mucho.

The last 2 days have been crazy, but I made it, I’m done with this semester and I’ll finally be able to enjoy some days off of the university; it’s not gonna last very long, but I don’t mind, all I want is resting.

Try to guess what’s “Day 306” photo, it wasn’t an easy shot, and the subject is not something you can find every day; I wasn’t really sure about posting it, but when I saw it in the screen, I liked it.

Today I’ve spent the day at home relaxing and resting, getting ready to star a new week, my last week of classes, finally.

In the afternoon, I grabbed my camera but it as running out of battery, this one doesn’t take that long for loading and therefore I could shoot today’s photo. This is a lamp that we have in the living room, I started noticing that all the shadows and lights could give me an interesting result and I was sure I was going to get something completely different to everything I’ve done.

This was the outcome.

Lately I’ve spent more time in the university than at home, but next week I’ll start enjoying some days off and I really can’t wait, I’m completely exhausted but really looking forward to have some days for doing nothing else that relaxing.

This is today’s shot, of course, taken in the university, where I’ve seen so many squirrels in the last days; here you go with some facts about them:

Squirrels have excellent peripheral vision.

Ultimamente he estado más tiempo en la universidad que en mi casa, pero la otra semana voy a salir a vacaciones y voy a poder descansar, no veo la hora de tener unos dias libres para hacer nada y sólo relajarme.

Esta es la foto de hoy, la tomé en la universidad donde los últimos dias he visto muchísimas ardillas. Aca van unos datos curiosos sobre ellas.

Hay más de 300 clases de ardillas.

Las ardillas pueden pesar desde 15 gramos hasta 8 kilos.

Algunas ciudades de Estados Unidos protegen colonias de ardillas albinas.

Las ardillas tienen excelente visión periférica.

Las madres ardillas pueden ser caníbales.

Las ardillas de tierra nunca viven en árboles, pero las ardillas de árboles viven a veces en la tierra

Un estudió demostró que las ardillas disfrutan molestar a los perros, y ser perseguidas por ellos, todo por la adrenalina.

Las ardillas no flotan.

I have to admit that I’m not a cat lover, but when it comes to photos things change, they are not patient, some of them seem to be afraid of the cameras, but they are great models; I particularly liked the expression of this one.

I also did another version of my photo, trying some selective colouring, and when I saw it, I couldn’t decide which one I liked the most. I like the green in the first one, but I also like how the b&w background makes the cat stand out; which one do you prefer?

Tengo que admitir que no soy un amante de los gatos, pero cunado se trata de fotos las cosas cambian; los gatos no son pacientes, se mueven mucho, pareciera que no les gusta la cámara, pero son muy fotogénicos; de éste me encantó su expresión.

Hoy hice dos versiones de mi foto, la normal y una donde utilizo color selectivo; cuando la vi no supe cuál de las dos me gustaba más. En la primera, me gusta el verde del fondo, y en la segunda, me gusta como el fondo en blanco y negro hace resaltar al gato; cual de las dos les gusta más?

I’m glad to say that I made it to Day 300; there were a couple of days when I started where I thought about stopping it because I felt that there was nothing else to take photos of; but my mind has changed with the days, I can prove it with the photo #300; I’ve realized that there are endless things to shoot and I’ve learned to see the beauty in everything.

But no matter what, there is always gonna be something that makes what I’m used to see turn into something completely different; it makes me think that what I see everyday isn’t just common, there is always something that is going to end up surprising me.

Mucha gente me ha dicho que tengo que apreciar lo que veo desde el lugar donde vivo; si, es bonito, pero ya es algo que he visto toda mi vida y me he acostumbrado a eso, a las mismas montañas que rodean la ciudad, a los mismos edificios, las mismas calles, y en ciertos momentos encuentro todo esto como algo normal.

Pero de cualquier manera, siempre hay algo en cualquier momento del día que rompe esa rutina, que me hace pensar en lo que me dice la gente, y que hace que eso que estoy acostumbrado a ver, se transforme por unos minutos en algo completamente diferente que va a terminar sorprendiéndome.

I’ve been experimenting a bit with bokeh today, I got some portraits, some objects with the bokeh in the background and afterwards I started moving my hand close to the lens and then I got what you see in the first photo,I like it because it looks kind of abstract, and as you all know, abstractions are something fascinating to me.

Estuve jugando un poquito con el bokeh, saqué unos retratos, algunos objetos y luego empecé a experimentar pasando mi mano cerca al lente mientras todo estaba desenfocado, eso es lo que ven en la primera foto, me gustó porque se ve algo abstracto, y como saben, todas las abstracciones me fascinan.

Saying good bye is never easy, but fortunately, it didn’t hit us as hartd as it did a year ago, maybe because we know that in about 11 months we’ll be together again.

My classes have kept me busy and distracted, and I think that’s good; I spent the whole afternoon there studying for an exam, and I could see this bird in the distance; I took my camera and tried to get as close as possible, it started like playing with me, flying from one branch to another one, and I got some shots with different angles, but I loved this one because of the sun shining on the bird.

Las despedidas nunca son fáciles, pero afortunadamente no fue tan dificil como el año pasado, depronto porque sabemos que en unos 11 meses vamos a volver a estar juntos.

Mis clases en la universidad me han tendido ocupado y distraido, no puedo creer que diga algo así, pero de cierto modo es bueno, aunque no veo la hora de estar en vacaciones.

Hoy estuve toda la tarde en la universidad estudiando para un examen, en un momento vi algo volar, era éste pájaro, empecé a acercarme lentamente, él empezó a jugar moviéndose de una rama a otra, dándome la espalda y luego girando, por eso pude tomar fotos de todos los ángulos, unas muy cercanas, otras no tanto, pero la luz del sol sobre el pájaro en esta hizo que me gustara incluso más que otras donde el detalle en su cara es muy bueno por la poca distancia a la que estabamos.

No  mucho para decir hoy, Nicola y yo hemos estado pasando nuestras últimas horas juntos de este año; después de ir al supermercado a que ella comprara unas cosas para llevar a Alemania, fuimos a dar una vuelta, pasamos por este árbol, nos bajamos del carro a tomarle unas fotos, y como siempre, ella me tuvo mucha paciencia mientras sacaba algo que me gustara.

Today after lunch, my god-daughter started playing with some things in the balcony, I was close to her, and all of a sudden she came to me showing me something she found, it was this bug, it was pretty small and seemed to have been dead for a while; it’s colors really caught my attention and I decided to use it as a model.

Hoy después de almuerzo, mi ahijada se fue a jugar con algunos adornos en el balcón, yo estbaa cerca y de repente se acercó a mi para mostrarme algo que había encontrado; era este pequeño bicho que parecía estar muerto desde hace mucho; sus colores me encantaron y decidí usarlo como modelo para hoy.

I went out today with Nicola and a friend of us who arrived from Denmark the same day that Nicola arrived, she was up there doing exchange for one year as I did 3 years ago, and we really wanted to catch up with her.

We went to eat something that we all like, it’s called “Arepa de chócolo”  and it’s one of the ypical things you can find here in Colombia.

Arepa is a dish made of ground corn dough or cooked flour, and there are so many kinds of arepas; they are typical in Colombia and Venezuela, but they can be found in Panama as well; the ones we ate are made of a different kind of corn, a bit sweeter, darker yellow, thinner and larger, the kernels have to be roasted and ground.

Hoy Nicola y yo salimos a comer algo en la noche, fuimos con una amiga que llegó el mismo día quee Nicola, pero llegó de Dinamarca, donde estuvo haciendo un año de intercambio, y queriamos desatrazarnos un poco.

Salimos a comer algo que a los tres nos gusta, “arepa de chócolo”, que es una de las cosas típicas que se encuentran en Colombia.

Para muchos una arepa es algo desconocido, pero aca les explico; es algo hecho con masa de maiz o una harina del mismo elemento que se puede conseguir en los supermercados.

Hhay muchos tipos de arepas, sobre todo en Colombia y Venezuela, de donde son típicas.  La que comimos hoy está hecha de un tipo especial de maiz, más dulce, más oscuro, delgado y largo; los granos tienen que ser asados y luego molidos.

I found this dragonfly today in this stick, when I got close to take a picture, it flew and I walked away; some minutes later I looked at the stick and the dragonfly was there again, I approached slowly and quietly but the same thing happened, it flew away, but I knew it was gonna be back in some minutes, so I sat close by to wait, the dragonfly came back and I snapped some pictures; I could get really close, but the angle was different and the eyes weren’t visible, therefore, I chose this one.

Some facts about this animals:

Some scientists say that the high oxygen levels during the Paleozoic era allowed dragonflies to grow to monster size.

Dragonflies are expert fliers. They can fly straight up and down, hover like a helicopter and even mate mid-air.

If they can’t fly, they’ll starve because they only eat prey they catch while flying.

Some adult dragonflies live for only a few weeks while others live up to a year.

Dragonflies are not born with wings.

Male dragonflies can be very territorial

Hoy encontré esta libélula en un palo, cuando me acerqué a tomarle una foto, voló y me devolví al lugar donde estaba; después de unos minutos volví a mirar y otra vez estaba en el mismo palo, me acerqué más lento y mas silencioso que antes, pero lo mismo pasó.

Me imaginé que la libélula iba a volver al mismo lugar, así que me senté cerca a esperar, y así pasó, unos minutos después estaba ahi otra vez; tomé unas fotos, incluso me acerqué más, pero el ángulo de las otras es diferente y los ojos no se ven, por eso elegí esta.

Algunos datos sobre las libélulas:

Hay científicos que dicen que los niveles de oxígeno durante el Paleozóico eran tan altos que las libélulas podian crecer hasta alcanzar un tamaño gigante.

Las libélulas son excelentes voladores, lo pueden hacer hacia arriba, hacia abajo, como un helicóptero, incluso reproducirse en el aire.

Si no pueden volar, se mueren de hambre, pues sólo pueden capturar a su presa en el aire.

Algunas libélulas adultas viven sólo unas semanas, mientras que otras pueden vivir todo un año.

Las libélulas no nacen con alas.

Los machos pueden llegar a ser muy territoriales.

Exams is a word that I’ve used a lot lately and a word that didn’t make me happy but  stressed me, finally, exams are over. I think this week was the busiest week I’ve ever had in my life, I spent more time in the university than at home, but that’s life sometimes and although I was busy, I had one of the most amazing weeks so far 🙂 .

These are yesterday’s and today’s shot, yesterday I had my final exam, then went out to take some photos and afterwards spent time with Nicola and some friends eating pizza and celebrating the end of classes.

And today, Nicola wanted to go to Salento and Filandia, two towns that we love; as her wishes are orders for me,  we went there to eat lunch, walk a bit, and went to some places she wanted to visit before leaving; on our way back I felt that there was something wrong in the car, later, we got stranded but the problem was solved, it was quite a journey.

Examenes es una palabra que utilicé toda la semana y no me hacía muy feliz, pero al fin, se acabaon los examenes. Esta semana fue sin lugar a dudas la semana más ocupada que he tenido en toda mi vida, estuve más tiempo en la universidad que en la casa, pero no tengo derecho a quejarme porque aunque fue una semana dificil, fue también una de las mejores de mi vida.

Estas son las fotos de ayer y de hoy, no había tenido timepo de ponerlas; ayer tuve el último examen del semestre, luego salí un rato a tomar fotos y después estuve con Nicola y unos amigos comiendo pizza y celebrando el fin de semestre.

Hoy Nicola quería ir a Salento y Filandia, dos pueblos que nos encantan, y como para mi sus deseos son ordenes, fuimos, almorzamos, caminamos, y visitamos algunos lugares que ella quería ver antes de volver a Alemania; en el camino de regreso sentí que había algo raro en el carro, y más tarde el carro se dañó, afortnadamente todo se arregló, fue un día muy chévere.

Today I didn’t have a lot of free time, but I still managed to get some pictures, I was walking in the university and heard a bird singing close to me, then I looked carefully in the tree and saw it, a blue-grey tanager, the bird I used to try to catch when I was a little kid. I stayed still, and quietly took my camera out of the bag, then started shooting trying my best to get a decent focus, and this is what I got.

Some facts about the blue-grey tanager

The blue-grey tanager is a medium-sized South American bird.

Its range is from Mexico south to northeast Bolivia On Trinidad and Tobago they are called Blue Jean.

The Blue-grey Tanager is 16-18 cm long and weighs 30-40 grams, adults have a light bluish head and underparts, with darker blue upper parts and a shoulder patch colored a different hue of blue.

Hoy no tuve mucho tiempo para tomar fotos, pero aun así lo hice, y saqué algunas mientras estaba en la universidad. Mientras iba caminando escuché un pájaro cantar, pero el sonido se escuchaba muy cercano, empecé a mirar en un árbol y lo encontré, ahi estaba el azulejo, un pájaro que siempre intenté atrapar cuando estaba pequeño. Me que´de quieto, saqué la cámara y trate de hacer mi mejor esfuerzo para lograr un enfoque decente, esto fue a lo que llegué.

Algunos datos de los azulejos:

El azulejo es un pájaro pequeño originario de Sur América.

Se encuentra desde México hasta el noroeste de Bolivia, mide entre 16-18 centímetros de largo y pesa entre 30-40 gramos. Los adultos tienen la cabeza y las partes inferiores del cuerpo color gris azulado claro, las partes dorsales son azules oscuras, con verde azul brillante en las alas y la cola, y los hombro con diferentes matices de azul.

The university and the final exams have kept me really busy tis week, I’ve taken the photos but I haven’t been able to post them on time because of all the things that have to be done first, this is yesterday’s photo, I only got to shoot two photos in the whole day, both of them of this sunset, after I took this one, my camera ran out of battery; I was lucky to get at least one that I liked.

I found this piano in the arts faculty of the university, I liked it, it was completely dirty, broken and looked pretty old, some people might say it’s ugly, but sometimes, the ugly things end up being photogenic.

Otro post rápido, creo que esta semana va a estar llena de ellos, pero no tengo tiempo para escribir algo que tenga sentido, mis dias van a estar llenos de estudio, pero es el último sacrificio del semestre.

Hoy encontré este piano en la facultad  de artes de la universidad, un piano viejo, sucio y dañado, mucha gente pensará que es horrible, pero a mi me gustó, a veces las cosas más feas son las más fotogénicas.

I went to eat lunch with my family today, we went to a nice restaurant with a small lake to fish and a big area to walk, I took a walk with my camera while we all were waiting for the food and I stumbled upon a garden with some nice flowers, afterwards, I saw like 5 different species of butterflies flying from one to another flower, took some photos but it wasn’t an easy task because I had to manual focus and the butterflies were moving all the time, at the end I liked this one.

Hoy salí a almorzar con mi familia, fuimos a un restaurante muy bonito que tenía un lago para pescar y unos senderos para caminar; mientras esperaba el almuerzo fui a caminar un rato y me encontré con un pequeño jardín lleno de flores, después de un rato vi 5 mariposas de especies diferentes volando de una flor a otra, empecé a tomar fotos pero no fue facil porque el enfoque era manual y las mariposas no dejaban de moverse, al final, esta fue la que más me gustó.

Today Colombia celebrates its independence day, it commemorates the formation of the country’s first representative council against the spanish rule in 1810 at Bogotá. Colombia gained independence from Spain in 1819 when Simon Bolívar decisively defeated the Spanish.

I didn’t choose to be Colombian, I was just lucky.

Hoy en Colombia se celebra el día de la independencia, se conmemora la conformación del primer movimiento que se levantó contra el regimen español in 1810 en Bogotá. Colombia llegó a independizarse de España en 1819 cuando Simón Bolívar derrotó a los españoles.

Este fue el primer día en Pereira después del viaje y ya extraño la costa, en especial el mar y todas las cosas coloridas que hay alla, aunque no puedo dejar de reconocer que esta parte también es muy bonita y colorida.

No hay mucho por decir, he estado ocupado desatrazandome de la universidad, como el fin de semestre está cerca hay muchos trabajos por hacer, así que creo que no va a ser el último día en el que voy a escribir poco y tarde.

Day 275 – 276 – 277 – 278 – 279 – 280

EN: After a couple of days I’m back; last friday Nicola, Sebastian and I arrived in Cartagena, a city on the northern coast of Colombia. As we arrived there in the evening we went out knowing nothing about where to go, we just walked a bit to discover the place, I was fascinated by the style of the constructions there, the old city is composed by old houses with a colonial architecture, colorful stores, restaurants, and narrow cobblestone streets utilized primarily by pedestrians and passing carriages.

Cartagena was named UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1984.

ESP: Después de unos dias de descanso ya estoy de regreso, el viernes pasado Nicola, Sebastian y yo, fuimos a Cartagena, llegamos en la noche y como no sabiamos que podiamos hacer, caminamos un poco para descubrir un poco el lugar, me encantó toda la arquitectura de la ciudad vieja, que está compuesta por casas coloniales, tiendas y restaurantes llenos de color y calles adoquinadas que son usadas sólo por la gente o por las carrozas.

Cartagena fue declarada patrimonio de la humanidad por la UNESCO en 1984

 

Day 276

EN: On the second day of our trip we took a boat to Rosario Islands, it’s an archipelago composed by 27 coral islands, islets and keys; and it’s located 46 km away of Cartagena.

It’s one of the 46 natural parks of Colombia, created in order to protect the most important coral reef of the country.

Afterwards we stayed in Baru, a peninsula located in the south of Cartagena, there are some towns there and it’s population is about 10.000 people, the peninsula is 60 km² and the sea there was just breathtaking.

ESP: En el segundo día de viaje tomamos una lancha que nos llevó a Islas del Rosario, es un archipielago compuesto de 27 islas, islotes y cayos que se ubica a 46 kilómetros de Cartagena.

Es uno de los 46 parques nacionales creados para preservar la barrera de coral más importante que hay en el país.

Después de ver algunas islas, decidimos quedarnos en Barú, una pnínsula al sur de Cartagena que tiene una población de 10.000 habitantes y tiene 60 km². El mar era espectacular y la playa eran espectaculares.

 

Day 277

EN: On the third day we woke up very early to go to Taganga, which is an old fishing village located 3 hours away from Cartagena.

Its name comes from two possible destinations: “mountain of snakes” derived from Indian words or “Site where the sea is found” which will have to do with the etymology of Indian words.

It is characterized by beautiful landscapes and viewpoints, and has a tradition of fishing.

Taganga is considered to be one of the major dive sites in Colombia for its famous coral reefs and magnificent marine life.

There I found a fishing boat that made me smile, La Preciosa, it was quite different to the other ones and immediately got my attention.

 

ESP: En el tercer día nos levantamos temprano para ir a Taganga, un pueblo de pescadores que queda a tres horas de Cartagena.

Sobre su extraño nombre hay dos teorias, una es que proviene de “Montaña de serpientes”, y la otra de “Lugar donde se encuentra el mar”, ambas derivadas de etimología india. El pueblo se caracteriza por sus paisajes, montañas cercanas y miradores, además por su tradición pesquera. Se considera uno de los más importantes para bucear en Colombia.

Alla encontré este bote pesquero, “La Preciosa”, totalmente diferente a todos los que había, por eso me llamó la atención.

 

Day 278

EN: Fourth day of our trip: We woke up, had breakfast, and then went to the swimming pool to relax for a while, the weather was amazing, we had sunny days in our trip and it was really warm, but as long as there is a beach nearby I don’t complain about the heat.

At noon we left Taganga and went to Santa Marta, which is the oldest remaining city in Colombia; the city is a popular tourist destination due to its history, architecture and nature reserves.

There we went to the beach, we ate seafood, we walked through the historical center and ended up in the beach, watching the stunning sunset. Then we went back to Taganga.

ESP: Cuarto día de viaje: Nos despertamos temprano, desayunamos y fuimos a la piscina a relajarnos un rato, el clima estuvo perfecto, todos los dias fueron soleados, y aunque hacía calor, el tener una playa cerca hace que no me queje de la temperatura.

A medio día fuimos a Santa Marta, que es la ciudad más antigua aun existente en Colombia; la ciudad es un destino turístico importante debido a su historia, arquitectura y reservas naturales.

Alla estuvimos en la playa, comimos comida de mar, caminamos por el centrohistórico, y terminamos en la playa viendo el atardecer que estuvo espectacular; luego nos devolvimos a Taganga.

 

Day 279

EN: On the fifth day of our trip we stayed in Taganga the whole morning before going back to Cartagena, we actually didn’t do much, just go out for a while, swimming in the pool, organizing the room and that was all; in the afternoon we arrived in Cartagena again, and went out in the evening to eat something with another german exchange student who was there and who is friends with Sebastian, his family from Germany came to visit him and he traveled to Cartagena with them and with his host family, Nicola and I decided to join them because we knew it was gonna be fun.

ESP: En el quinto día de viaje decidimos descansar en Taganga por la mañana  antes de volver a Cartagena, no hicimos mucho, simplemente salimos un rato, nadamos en la piscina organizamos los cuartos y eso fue todo; en la tarde llegamos a Cartagena otra vez y por la noche salimos a comer con otro estudiante de intercambio alemán que estaba alla.

Su familia de Alemania vino a visitarlo, y viajaron a Cartagena con su familia anfitriona, Nicola y yo decidimos acompañarlos porque sabiamos que esa comida con esa mezcla de culturas y de idiomas iban a ser una locura.

EN: In our last day in Cartagena we went to San Felipe’s castle, it’s a fortress located on the top of a hill called San Lázaro; it was built by the Spanish during the colonial era. Construction began in the year 1536, and it was originally known as San Lázaro’s castle.

After spending 2 hours there, we walked towards the historical center of Cartagena, where we had been the last evening and the first one in Cartagena, we had not seen it during the day time.

The architecture was completely stunning, all the balconies were really amazing, they had different kind of flowers adorning them, you see so much beauty there. We also found different street vendors with the handicrafts that they sell, they were really nice, colorful and had so many details; we spent the whole day looking for different gifts to bring home; afterwards, we drove to the airport and that’s how our trip came to an end.

ESP: En nuestro último día en Cartagena fuimos al Castillo de San Felipe, una fortaleza ubicada en la cima de una colina llamada San Lázaro; fue construido por los españoles durante la colonia. La construcción empezó en 1536, y originalmente se llamó Castillo de San Lázaro.

Después de casi dos horas recorriéndolo, nos fuimos hacia el centro histórico donde habíamos estado la noche anterior y la primera noche en Cartagena, nunca lo habiamos visto de día.

La arquitectura es espectacular, las casas de estilo colonial tienen unos balcones muy bonitos, y unas paredes con colores muy llamativos que hacen resaltar las flores que las adornan; también encontramos muchas artesanias, y viéndolas y buscando entre ellas regalos para traer a casa se nos fue el día; más tarde fuimos al aeropuerto, y así fue como nuestro viaje llegó a su fín.

Seems like the annoying heat that we had a couple of days ago is coming to an end, today it’s been pretty cloudy and has been raining a lot; while I was on my way home, I shot this picture in her car and I like how it came out, it also shows pretty much how the weather has been like today.

BTW, Tomorrow I’m going to travel and I won’t be back before next wednesday, so when I come back I’ll catch up with my post and some other blogs.

Parece que el calor insoportable que estuvo haciendo hace unos dias esta llegando a su fin; hoy el día ha estado más bien nublado, lluvioso y a ratos frio; mientras volvía de la uiversidad, tomé esta foto en el carro de una amiga, sin intención alguna de subirla, pero cunado la vi en la pantalla me gustó el detalle de las gotas, además aunque es  una foto sencilla, muestra mucho como ha sido todo este día.

Por cierto, mañana voy a viajar y no voy a volver antes del miércoles, así que cuando regrese, me desatrazo de todos los post que voy a dejar de escribir estos dias.

A while ago my mom found this tiny worm,  I swear it was tiny, I’m sure it isn’t even 1 cm long; when she told me about it, I immediately thought that this was gonna be the perfect subject for the reversing ring.

When I was photographing it, I was completely amazed by the detail, it’s unbelievable how you get to see such small things as something really huge.

Mi mamá encontró este gusano, es diminuto, seguro que no mide más de un centímetro.

Cuando me dijo que había encontrado algo que me podía servir para mi foto de hoy no pensé que fuera algo así; luego lo lo vi, y supe que era perfecto para tratarlo con el anillo de reversa.

Es impresionante como a través de ese objeto, una cosa tan pequeña se ve como algo inmenso.

Hello, I am Nicola and I am writing a part of todays post. Pablo and I have been in the botanical garden of his university, it is very big and beautiful, there are a lot of flowers and animals to see. Pablo took  some photos and we both liked this one most. Greetings to everyone and all of you should come to Colombia one day.

Okay, now it’s me , Pablo, and I’m taking over my blog again; what Nicola wrote is right; actually chose this one because it’s the first time that I managed to capture the hummingbird away from the feeders, and the colors in the flowers really drew me in. I think she gives me luck 🙂 .

Soy Nicola y estoy escribiendo un parte del post de hoy. Pablo y yo hemos estado en el jardin botanico de su universidad, es muy grande y me parece hermoso, porque se ven muchos flores y animales alla. Pablo tomó unas fotos y a nosotros dos nos gustó mas esta. Saludos a todos, deberian venir a Colombia alguna vez y sí ya estan aqui estan en el país mas maravilloso que he visto.

Bueno, ahora estoy escribiendo yo, Pablo, y vuelvo a tomar el control de mi blog; lo que escribió Nicola es cierto; en verdad escogí esta foto porque es la primera vez que pude tomar una foto del colibrí en los flores y no en el comedero, y los colores de las flores me gustaron. Since I got up today, I have been crazy about the beautiful blue sky that we are having today; here is very unusual to have a clear sky and with these blue tones, when it’s clear it gets cloudy quickly, but today it’s remained like this for a couple of hours; I decided to create a panorama of the city to show the chain of mountains that surround it, for this one I had to take 12 photos and merge them; wasn’t quite easy but I think it worth it.

El cielo de hoy ha estado espectacular, y bastante inusual; no es común ver el cielo tan despejado y con unos tonos de azul tan fuertes como los de hoy, y menos aun, que después de tanto tiempo siga casi igual y no se haya nublado; en mi opinió el cielo resalta las montañas que rodean la ciudad, y para mostrarlas, decidí crear una panorámica para la cual tomé 12 fotos, no fue faicl, pero cuando vi el resultado, sentí que valió la pena.

I took this shot in the afternoon while the sun was shining; it’s not a crop, I got it like this using the reversing ring and gotta admit that it was very challenging, getting a decent focus was quite a task because it was completely manual, and with this ring if you move a millimeter you will get everything out of focus; after almost 10 pictures taken, I got this one, I liked it, and I decided to leave Nicola and her Nicoleyes alone .

Esta tarde estuve experimentando con los ojos de Nicola y el anillo de reversa, esta foto salió así, no es un recorte, simplemente el lente invertido da un detalle impresionante, y la luz del sol nos ayudó mucho; el enfoque fue muy dificil porque fue totalmente manual, y si uno se mueve un milímetro, todo queda desenfocado.

Después de casi 10 fotos, salió esta, me gustó y decidi dejar a la modelo en paz .

I’m posting very late today, but you already know who to blame 😉

After eating lunch, I created a sort of studio in the dinner tableand I started experimenting with something.

The results I was getting weren’t what I was aiming for, I gave it a try for a long while but I had to much light in that place and getting what I wanted was going to be almost impossible, then I started trying different perspectives for the objects I was using as a subject, and this is the one I liked the most.

Finally the day I was longing for arrived, and it brought me one of the most important persons of my life, Nicola.

I know that not many of you know who is Nicola, I just can say that to me she is the most amazing person in the whole world; she was an exchange student last year in Pereira, I was her contact person, but we ended up becoming like best friends, it was really hard when she left because everything felt empty, we spent a lot of time together just talking about nothing and everything, doing silly stuffs, laughing the whole day. The last evening she came back and she will stay for about 4 weeks, so if I stop blogging for a while, blame it on her 😉 .

This was the only photo I shot today, I had something else in mind but I was busy in the university and afterwards I was hanging out with Nicola and I didn’t take anything else -Aside the photos of us doing silly stuffs-.

Al fin el día que tanto anhelaba llegó, y con él, una de las personas más especiales de mi vida, Nicola.

Muchos no saben quien es, ella fue una estudiante de intercambio en Pereira, yo era su persona de contacto y terminamos siendo los mejores amigos, ella se fue hace un año, y anoche volvió a quedarse por 4 semanas, así que si en estas 4 semanas no blogeo, la culpa la tiene ella 😉 .

Para ser honesto, esta fue la única foto que tomé hoy, tenía algo más en mente pero estuve ocupado en la universidad y luego me fui con Nicola, por eso no tomé más fotos -A parte de las fotos de los dos haciendo bobadas como siempre 🙂 –

Before starting to study today, I took a really short walk nearby the university’s library and I saw this dandelion. I had not seen one of them in a long while and I had the camera with me, so I took some photos, and afterwards blew it while made a wish that hopefully will be granted in exactly 7 hours. I gotta say that I don’t believe in that kid of things, but who knows, maybe this was a sign.

Really looking forward to this evening, can’t wait to see someone after a long time, that’s all I’m telling you 🙂 .

Antes de empezar a estudiar en la mañana, estuve caminando en la universidad cerca a la biblioteca, y encontré un diente de león.

Hace mucho tiempo no veía uno y como tenía la cámara saqué unas fotos de él, nunca lo había hecho antes y  ahora entiendo por qué hay tanta gente que se obsesiona con ellos; después lo soplé mientras pedía un deseo, que espero  se cumpla en exactamente 7 horas 🙂 . La verdad, nunca he creido en ese tipo de cosas, no creo que se necesite nada de eso para que algo se haga realidad, pero me parecio una buena señal.

I found this flowers today and the colors really impressed me, I think I had never seen them before and the point of view I had helped me to get this composition.

When I came home I asked my mom what flower it was and she knew it, the flower is called “Fuchsia” and doing a little research I found that there are about 110 recognized species of this flower, the majority are native to South America, but with there are a few occurring north through Central America to Mexico, and also several from New Zealand to Tahiti.

There is not much left to say today my week is just starting and hopefully tomorrow is gonna be one of the greatest days of my life, you will know why soon. 🙂

265 down, only 100 to go! Unbelievable, time is just flying and this project is slowly coming to an end.

Encontré estas flores en un balcón, y sus colores me gustaron mucho, nunca las había visto antes, y el ángulo en el que las tenía hizo que me llamaran la atención aun más y me ayudó a componer algo diferente.

Cuando volví a mi casa, le pregunté a mi mamá sí sabía qué flor era esa, me dijo que se llama fuchsia, y buscando un poco sobre ella encontre que hay cerca de 110 especies de estas flores, la mayoría osn nativas de Sudamérica pero se encuentran algunas desde Norte hasta Centro América, llegando a México; también son conocidas en Nueva Zelanda y Tahiti.

No hay mucho que decir hoy, mi semana apenas empieza y presiento que va a ser una de las mejores de mi vida. 🙂

Day 264

This has been without a doubt a long weekend spent traveling in the coffee area, today it was a holiday here in Colombia and I went with 2 friends to a small town called Filandia.

The town houses a small community economically supported by agriculture and tourism. Although coffeeis the major agricultural product, the municipality’s diverse ecosystem makes it perfect for the production of numerous fruits and vegetables. The population is evenly split between the urban and rural areas, with an urban population in the town of Filandia itself of nearly 7000 inhabitants and a population of around 6500 in the rest of the municipality.

We spent time in the town walking around, getting to know it well, I had been there several times but I never spent more than one hour there, and we had the chance to go into a cafe, restaurants, try different food and afterwards we went to a hotel owned by one of my friend’s relatives, the house that you see in the picture. The architecture is stunning and it has so many details and colors that called my attention.

Este fue un fin de semana largo porque hoy lunes fue festivo en Colombia, así que hoy también me fui con unos amigos de viaje, fuimos a Filandia, un pueblo en la zona cafetera.

El pueblo es pequño y su economía se basa en la agricultura y el turismo; aunque el café es lo que más se produce, el ecosistema de la región es perfecto para la producción de diferentes frutas y vegetales. La población de Filandia está dividida en la parte urbana y la de las areas rurales, la primera es de unos 7000 habitantes, mientras que la otra se compone de unos 6500.

Estuvimos caminando po el pueblo, yo había estado alla muchas veces pero nunca tanto tiemp como hoy, fuimos a un café, a rtestaurantes, probamos diferentes comidasy al final fuimos a un hotel, propiedad de la familia de una amiga con quien estabamos; es una casa cafetera, con una arquitectura espectacular y unos detalles y colores muy bonitos.

Day 263

Every year in a small town located in the Coffee Triangle and named Calarcá, there is a big parade that has become a symbol of this country, and it’s the Jeep Willys Parade most know as the Yipao parade and contest. (In Day 107 I explained that the loaded jeeps are called “Yipaos”)

It took place today and I went there with my uncle, the town was full and everybody was amazed by the decoration of these cars, it was really nice to see all the different stuffs that they can carry and how they can manage to ride only on its rear wheels. I’m posting more than one photo today, even a video I made, because, why limiting myself to post only one photo if through this post you can get to see a lot of this crazy tradition?

This event pays due homage to the region’s icon, the Willys Jeep, for its performance up and down the coffee mountains of Colombia carrying people, coffee, products, and many kinds of objects.

I did a little research and found that the categories of the contest are:

Transportation of agricultural products:

In this category, the Willys vehicles are loaded with the produce of the region such as coffee, bananas, plantains, manioc, firewood, and citric fruits.

Traditional house moving:

This is a very picturesque category. Contestants load their Willys jeep with the maximum number of household and farm items used on coffee farms. The Willys is piled up with furniture (beds, chairs, tables, wardrobes), plants, pictures, pets (dogs, cats, and birds), farm animals (pigs, ducks), a sewing machine, mattresses, blankets, clothes, pots and pans, hens in cages, lamps, toilets, portraits of grandparents, and even family members.

Free category:

This category requires a great deal of creativity. The Jeeps are dressed up as and loaded with anything the contestant can think of: animals, dolls, a soccer team, shoes, etc.

The pique contest:

This contest is about loading the Willys with 1,800 kg of any of the region’s products (generally, coffee). The weight must be carefully distributed at the rear of the Jeep for the vehicle to lean backwards and advance only on its rear wheels. The objective of the pique is to keep the vehicle going forward on a straight line on two wheels for the longest possible distance.

In February 2006, a Guinnes World Record was established the for the “Longest Jeep Parade” in Calarca, with a caravan of over 370 Jeep Willys vehicles.

Cada año en un pueblo de la zona cafetera llamado Calarcá, hay un gran desfile que se ha vuelto un símbolo de la región y del país, y es el desfile y concurso de Jeep Willys o Yipaos. (En el Día 107 expliqué que un Yipao es un Jeep cargado con algo)

Este evento se realizó hoy y yo fui a verlo con mi tio, el pueblo estaba lleno, y todas las personas estaban asombradas de ver la decoración de todos estos carros, de la creatividad y habilidad que tienen para hacer todo el montaje y de los espectáculos que con ellos hacen, como hacerlo andar sólo en las ruedas traseras. ¿Por qué limitarme a poner sólo una foto hoy si con este post pueden conocer mucho de éste evento? Aca van varias de cómo fue, incluso hay un video que hice y creo que vale la pena verlo.

Este desfile es un homenaje al Yipao, que es un símbolo de la región cafetera y que por mucho tiempo ha transportado a través de las montañas a mucha gente, animales, frutas, alimentos y otros objetos.

Estuve buscando algo de información y encontré que las categorias del concurso son:

Transporte de productos agrícolas:

En ésta categoríaIn this category, los Yipaos están cargados con productos que se dan en ésta región, como café, banano, plátano, yuca, leña y cítricos.

Trasteo:

Es una categoría muy pintoresca, los competidores cargan sus jeeps con el mayort número posible de elementos de la casa de la zona cafetera, los jeeps terminan con sillas, camas, armarios, televisores, colchones, fotos, lámparas, mesas, incluso con mascotas como perros, gatos, patos, gansos y otras aves.

Tema libre:

Es la categoría que requiere mayor creatividad, los jeeps son casi disfrazados y cargados con elementos diferentes dependiendo del concepto que su dueño tenga; algunos hacen cosas relacionadas a equipos de futbol, otros algo con animales, caricaturas, zapatos, etc.

El concurso de piques:

Este concurso consiste en cargar el carro con 1800 kilogramos de algún producto de la región, por lo general lo hacen con café. El peso debe ser distribuido de forma muy cuidadosa  en la parte trasera de jeep para que él pueda inclinarse hacia atras y avanzar sólo en sus ruedas traseras. El objetivo del pique es mantener el vehículo sólo en estas dos ruedas por la mayor distancia posible.

En Februaro del 2006, Calarcá obtuvo un Guinnes World por el desfile más largo de Yipaos, con más de 370 de éstos vehículos participando.

I woke up with an idea, it was more like a challenge and I didn’t know how the outcome was gonna be like, but I wanted to try it.

My challenge was taking today’s picture in my room, not anywhere at home, not outdoors, just inside my room; and I find that task pretty difficult because although I like my room, I see it everyday and to me everything in there looks pretty normal, I thought about finding something interesting, shooting a macro, but when I was looking at the few photos that I shot, I looked at one of the abstract things that I have in my room and I started composing something else with it, I liked the colors of it and the contrast against the green wall, and the shapes and lines that it has made choose it.

Hoy me desperté con una idea, más que eso era un reto que hace tiempo quería ponerme pero siempre encontraba algo diferente, y hoy quise darle un intento.

El reto era tomar una foto sin salir de mi cuarto, pero no tomar una foto de la vista desde mi cuarto sino de algo que encontrara, lo dificil era que aunque me gusta mi cuarto, estoy acostumbrado a ver todo lo que hay y todo me parece muy normal, por eso busqué algo interesante, diferente, busqué hacer macros, y cuando estaba mirando lo que había sacado vi uno de los cuadros abstractos que tengo y compuse eta foto con él, la escogí por los colores, las formas y el contraste contra la pared verde.

This is my first HDR with my new camera, I found one disadvantage and it’s that it doesn’t have a auto-bracketing function as the D5000, but it’s okay, when I first started making HDR I made them manual because I didn’t really know what was the autobracketing function for, when I found out I went crazy about it.

I woke up earlier than normal today, and when I was making my breakfast, I looked out of the kitchen’s window and liked how the sun was shining on somw of the buildings in the background, I got the camera and thought about an HDR, and this is how it came out.

Este es mi primer HDR con la cámara nueva, encontré una desventaja que tiene repecto a la otra y es que no tiene un sistema de bracketing como la D5000, pero está bien, cuando empecé a hacer HDRs los hacía completamente manual  porque no sabía para que era el bracketing, cuando supe  lo usé muchísimo, pero no es dificil acostumbrarme a tomar estas fotos manualmente.

Hoy me levanté más temprano de lo normal, cuando me hacía el desayuno miré por la ventana de la cocina y me gustó como el sol brillaba y resaltaba unos edificios que hay en el fondo; saqué la cámara, tomé las fotos con diferentes exposiciones, y así salió.

Hoy mientras iba camino a mi casa, encontré una telaraña y empecé a tomarle fotos para capturarla en detalle, pero el viento hacía esto muy dificil y fracasé porque teminé captando mejor la araña, pensé en borrar la foto, pero esperé a verla grande en el computador, y cunado la vi, en verdad me gustó mucho.

No hay mucho por decir hoy, pero como voy a tener un largo día, mejor me voy a empezar a hacer todo lo que debo.

I just came back from the airport, saying good bye wasn’t easy, but it had to be done.

Dany already left Pereira, and he left being like another colombian, he speaks spanish perfectly, makes no mistakes at all, has a really good accent, he had an andean guitar in his hand bag and he was wearing a the colombian typical hat, a poncho and the shirt of the colombian national team.

When he stepped on the plane we left, I went out of the airport with my brother and as I was driving to come back home,  I saw the plane where Dani was in; I wasn’t supposed to stay there to see the plane taking off, I didn’t want to but something inside me told me to do so, so I stopped and got off the car,  the plane was getting ready to take off the runway and starts its way to Bogotá, then a little bird stood close to me, she stayed there for a while doing the same as me, staring at the plane, which shortly after lifted off the ground and  disappeared into a small cloud.

The bird looked at me like it knew I just said good bye to someone, and then flew away and was out of sight in a couple of seconds, just like tha plane did.

Acabo de regresar del aeropuerto, despedirme no fue facil, nunca lo es, pero tenía que hacerlo.

Dani ya se fue de Pereira, se fue más colombiano que muchos, hablando español perfectamente, con acento muy “paisa” (de esta región), llevaba en la maleta de mano una guitarra andina y tenía puesto un sombrero vueltiao, un poncho y la camiseta de la selección Colombia.

Salí del aeropuerto con mi hermano y mientras manejaba, vi que el avión donde Dani iba estaba alistándose para despegar; paré un momento, me bajé del carro y este pájaro se posó muy cerca a mi, me posó para unas fotos, y se quedó un momento haciendo lo mismo que yo, mirar fijamente el avión. Poco después el avión empezó a carretear, despegó y se desapareció entre ua nube.

El pájaro al igual que yo, siguió con su mirada al avión hasta que desapareció, luego, se dio la vuelta y me miro a mi como si supiera que alguien importante iba en el avión, despues de unos segundos se fue volando y desapareció del mismo modo en el que el avión lo hizo.

Day 256

This is the day where I have to admit that there is something I really hate about my job; for those who don’t know I work with exchange students who come to spend one year either studying in the school or working doing any social service, that depends on their age, but usually I work with the guys who come for the school program.

I’m their contact person, if there is anything they need or if anything is going wrong, they can contact me at any time; I don’t get paid for it, I’m a volunteer but truth be told, this is a dream-job, I enjoy it, I like meeting people from different countries of the world and getting to know their cultures, traditions, points of view, listening to what they have to say, sharing stories and so on… That ain’t a hard job to me, takes time but I’ve gained a lot with these people.

How can you hate that job when it gives you so many opportunities?… Well, not everything is perfect, there is a day where you realize that the time left for the people you’ve become really good friends with is dwindling, and it’s dwindling quickly, and based on my previous experience, saying goodbye to them is not my strenght.

I hate good byes, I hate going to the airport to see someone leaving, I hate seeing the plane taking off and knowing that someone who one year ago came in my life is leaving.

Sometimes I feel like people is coming in and out of my life constantly, but when I rethink I realize that they are not coming out of my life, they still are part of it, in a different way but all the great moments that we spent together are never gonna be forgotten.

Tomorrow, a very good friend from Italy is going back home after spending a year in Pereira; it’s really sad to think that this year went by too fast and now we won’t see each other as often as before, but I’m grateful and lucky to have had the chance to meet him and learnt a lot about him.

You will be missed.

Este es uno de esos dias en los que tengo que admitir que hay algo que odio de mi trabajo; para los que no saben, yo trabajo con estudiantes de intercambio, unos vienen a Colombia a estudiar en colegios y otros vienen a hacer servicio social, eso depende de la edad, pero normalmente yo trabajo con los que vienen a colegio que son menores.

Yo soy la persona de contacto, a quienes recurren en cualquier momento en el que tengan una duda o un problema, pero a decir verdad, para mi no ha sido un trabajo, ha sido el mejor regalo que he podido tener y es el trabajo de los sueños de muchos, lo disfruto, me encanta conocer gente de todo el mundo y conocer a través de ellos sus culturas, tradiciones, escuchar sus historias, compartir con ellos y mostrarles parte del país, ellos me han hecho crecer y ganar mucho.

Ustedes se preguntaran ¿Cómo puede alguien odiar este trabajo si con él llegan tantas oportunidades?… Bueno, no todo es tan perfecto como parece, hay un día en el que uno se empieza a dar cuenta de que el tiempo de esas personas que se han vuelto tan cercanas a uno, y como parte de su familia, se está reduciendo rapidamente, y con lo que ya he vivido antes, decirles adios no es mi fortaleza.

Odio las despedidas, odio ir al aeropuerto a ver que alguien se va, odio ver el avión despegar sabiendo que adentro va una persona tan importante que entró a mi vida ahce un año y llegó a cambiarla.

A veces siento que la gente entra y sale de mi vida constantemente, pero cuando pienso bien las cosas no es así, ellos no salen de mi vida, siguen jugando un papel muy importante aunque de un modo diferente, ya no nos vemos ni hablamos tnato como cuando estaban aca, pero no salen de mi vida, son amigos que nunca se olvidan.

Mañana uno de ellos sde va, Dani, “el italiano”, un gran amigo que estuvo un año aca, lástima que el timepo pasó tan rápido, pero tengo que ser agradecido y considerarme afortunado de haber tenido la oportunidad de haberlo conocido, haber compartido y aprendido tanto de él.

Te vamos a extrañar mucho!

Day 255; Weekly Photo Challenge: Create

I have a guitar at home, I’ve always dreamt of learning to play it properly and also to play the saxophone, but I haven’t dedicated any time to it so far.

I decided to use the guitar for today’s photo and I reflected it in some drops that I placed on a glass, I used two lamps and spent more than 2 hours shooting and looking for different angles, I got so many photos and it was hard to choose only one; I also had lots of accidents while doing this picture, broke one of the lamps, then spilled water on the other one, later spilled it on the floor, but it was a really fun and difficult picture to shoot.

En mi casa tengo una guitarra, siempre he querdio aprender a tocarla bien, y tocar saxofón también, pero nunca le he dedicado nada de tiempo a la música.

Por lo tanto, para lo único que me sirve la guitarra ahora es para hacer fotos, y hoy la use para reflejarla en gotas de agua suspendidas en un vidrio, utilicé dos lámparas para darle un efecto diferente de iluminación, y estuve más de dos horas tomando fotos y buscando ángulos diferentes para ésta foto, además fue una aventura completa hacerla, quebré una de las lámparas, regué el agua sobre la otra, luego sobre el piso, pero bueno, al final y a pesar de su dificultad, fue una foto muy divertida de hacer.

Day 254

Another day without my compute; it feels really weird not to spend at least 3 hours in front of it per day, but I have to admit that not having it makes me spend more time on different things that I should do; hopefully it will be fixed tomorrow.

I went to the balcony around 6 pm and the sky was really beautiful, I knew that a couple of minutes later the sunset was gonna be really amazing, I waited there while I was looking at the sun going down, then the sky got even more beautiful and I started snapping photos, this is how my day ended.

Otro día sin computador, es raro no estar al menos 3 horas del día frente a él pero eso me obliga a hacer otras cosas, y dedicarle tiempo a otras cosas que también son importantes, aunque espero que mañana ya esté listo.

A eso de las 6 de la tarde pasé cerca al balcón y vi que el cielo estaba muy bonito, ya con eso sabía que el atardecer iba a ser espectacular, me quedé en el balcón un rato mientras el sol caía y luego todo se puso más bonito, empecé a tomar fotos del cielo, otras del sol, y estas fueron mis favoritas; así es como este día termina.

I wasn’t able to post before because my desktop is broken and probably it’s gonna take a while to be fixed.

I’ve spent most of the day at the university and there I saw this thing, flower, plant, I don’t know exactly what is it, but as soon as I saw it I liked its colors and I snapped 3 photos of it, and I decided to choose this one because of the vivid and bright colors, and the contrast with the background.

Hoy ha sido un poco dificil hacer este post, el computador se dañó y creo que van a pasar algunos dias antes de que esté listo otra vez.

Hoy estuve la mayor parte del tiempo en la universidad, y alla vi esta planta o flor, la verdad no se qué es exactamente, pero los colores me encantaron y me hicieron sacar la cámara,tomé 3 fotos pero escogí esta por los colores y por su contraste.

This is today’s photo, and truth be told there is not much to say about it. I came across these flowers and liked them, I didn’t even have to put a lot of effort because the subject was pretty simple, just set a good aperture to get the bokeh.

There is a long day out there waiting for me, so I better get it started.

Esta es la foto de hoy, a decir verdad no hay mucho que decir sobre ella, simplemente pasé al lado de estas flores, me gustaron y les tomé una foto que me gustó también; ni siquiera tuve que poner mucho esfuerzo porque era algo simple, sólo me encargué de escoger una apertura apropiada para lograr el desenfoque del fondo.

Hoy voy a tener un largo día, y mejor me voy a empezar a hacer todo lo que tengo que hacer, así que hasta mañana!

Day 251

Today after classes I went to the bird observatory in the university and saw lots of small and nice birds, but it was still very early; a while later my cousin called me asking if I was done with my classes and I thought about going to pick him up and go back to the university, so that he could see the birds that I saw and take him to the botanical garden, he loves nature.

We went there, the botanical garden of the university is more like a jungle, but it’s a nice place to walk, relax and take photos.

 We had a walk that lasted about 2 hours and got to see a lot, big and small birds, nice butterflies, even 2 snakes, I was really surprised because I had never seen a snake in the botanical garden, but my first encounter with the snake wasn’t really nice; I was walking and felt like step on something that was moving, therefore I moved and looked at the ground to see what it was, then I saw the snake running towards the trees and I walked away quickly.

Aside that scary part, our morning was very productive and enjoyable.

Hoy después de clases fui al observatorio de aves de la universidad y pude ver muchísimas aves de diferentes especies, cuando iba saliendo, me llamó mi primo y me preguntó si ya había salido de clases; como a él le gusta tanto la naturaleza y los animales, pensé recogerlo en la casa y llevarlo al jardín botánico de la universidad, y así lo hice.

El jardín de la universidad es más bien una especie de selva pero es perfecto  para ir a caminar, relajarse y tomar algunas fotos; caminamos casi dos horas y alcanzamos a ver mucho, pájaros, mariposas, flores e incluso culebras, lo que me sorprendió porque en todas las veces que he estado allá, es la primera vez que encuentro un animal de estos.

A pesar del encuentro no muy agradable con la culebra, la mañana con mi primito fue productiva y relajante.

Today I decided to experiment with the reverse ring that I got about a month ago; the macro reverse ring is made to attach to the front of the lens where usually filters are attached, it creates a cheap but amazing macro lens, and I assure you that the detail that you get is really amazing.

I loved the outcome of it, loved the bokeh, the texture and to me it’s such a magical picture.

Try to guess what my subject was, the answer will be posted in a couple of days.

Hoy decidí hacer uno de mis tantos experimentos, pero lo hice utilizando el anillo para reversar el lente que compré hace más de un mes, lo que hace ésto es permitir poner el lente de la cámara al revés y así lograr unos detalles increibles.

Me encantó el resultado, el bokeh, la textura, el detalle, y me pareció una foto en cierto modo mágica. Traten de adivinar cuál es el elemento principal de la foto.

I’ve been studying for almost 10 hours in a row, and the time to take pictures hasn’t been that much, but in the afternoon, I took a break and went to the balcony for a second and saw such an amazing  sky, shot some pictures of it, and when I was about to go back to study I saw something similar to what I posted in day 222, but this time it was bigger and more colorful, I shot pictures of it, and now that I’m done with my studying, I decided to make a little research to find out what causes these clouds and this is what I found:

First of all, it is called cloud iridescence and it’s an uncommon phenomenon; is the occurrence of colors in a cloud, similar to those seen in oil films on puddles; the colors are usually pastel, but sometimes they can be very vivid. Iridescence is generally produced near the sun, with the sun’s glare masking it, so it’s more easily seen by hiding the sun behind a tree or building.

Iridescent clouds are a diffraction phenomenon caused by small water droplets or small ice crystals individually scattering light. Larger ice crystals produce halos, which are a refraction phenomena rather than iridescence. Iridescence should similarly be distinguished from the refraction in larger raindrops that makes a rainbow.

If parts of clouds have small droplets or crystals of similar size, their cumulative effect is seen as colors. The cloud must be optically thin, so that most rays encounter only a single droplet. Iridescence is therefore mostly seen at cloud edges or in semi-transparent clouds, and newly forming clouds produce the brightest and most colorful iridescence.

Hoy estuve estudiando por casi 10 horas seguidas y no tuve mucho tiempo de tomar fotos, pero por la tarde tomé un break y fui al balcón, vi el cielo y empecé a tomar fotos, estaba muy bonito, los rayos del sol se veian espectaculares; luego cuando iba a volver a retomar el estudio, vi en el cielo una nube colorida, el mismo efecto que vi en el  dia 222, pero esta vez era mucho más grande y colorido, tomé algunas fotos y ahora que terminé de estudiar decidí investigar un poco para al fin saber qué produce el efecto, aca les dejo lo que encontré:

Una  nube iridiscente es una nubecon colores similares a los que se ven en un charco de aceite. Es un fenómeno meteorológico poco común, los colores observados son generalmente pastel, aunque algunas veces pueden ser muy vivos. La iridiscenciapuede ser observada con mayor frecuencia cerca del sol, tapada a menudo por el resplandor del sol. Puede ser observada con mayor facilidad ocultando el sol tras un árbol o edificio.

Las nubes iridiscentes son el resultado de la difracción de la luz solar a través de pequeñas gotas de agua o cristales de hielo que componen las nubes, desviando los rayos solares de forma individual. Los cristales de hielo de mayor tamaño provocan halos, los cuales son producto de la refraccióny no de la iridiscencia.

Si partes de la nube tienen gotas o cristales de tamaño semejante, la acumulación de este efecto provoca su coloración. La nube tiene que ser fina, de forma que la mayoría de los rayos de luz incidan solo en una gota. Esta es la razón por la cual la iridiscencia es normalmente observada en los bordes de las nubes o en nubes semitransparentes. La iridiscencia más clara y colorida es aquella provocada por nubes de reciente creación, ya que sus gotas tienen el mismo tamaño.

Day 247 – Weekly Photo Challenge: Close

These kids are my cousins, Luciana and Alejandro; she is my god-daughter and is 3 years old and he is 11; they don’t live in Pereira but yesterday they came to visit.

This morning we were jut hanging out in the living room, she made us watch Mickey Mouse for a while; I went to my room to get the camera, when I was back they were like playing and I got this picture that I really liked, it’s one of the most spontaneous shots that I’ve ever taken.

Estos dos niños son mis primos, Luciana y Alejandro; ella es mi ahijada, tiene 3 años y él tiene 11; no viven en Pereira pero ayer llegaron de visita.

Esta mañana estabamos en la sala poniendo todos los videos que ella quería, en un momento fui a buscar mi cámara y cuando volví los encontré jugando, les empecé a tomar unas fotos y me gustó mucho esta, me pareció muy espontanea.

Day 245

This is my last photo with my Nikon D5000, I ordered a new camera a couple of weeks ago and it surpringsily arrived today.

I’m quite happy and looking forward to start shooting with it; I haven’t really had any time to use it so far because I’ve been at the university nearly the whole day, I shot this one very early in the morning when I woke up, the sky looked really awesome.

In the morning I had absolutely no idea that the new camera was coming today, but later on I’ll give it a try and I really hope that getting used  to it doesn’t take me so long.

Ésta fue  mi última foto con mi Nikon D5000, hace unas semanas compré una cámara nueva y hoy llegó sorpresivamente.

Estoy muy contento y ansioso por empezar a usarla, no he tenido nada de tiempo porque he estado casi todo el día en la uiversidad. Ésta la tomé esta mañana muy temprano cuando me levanté y mire por la ventana, el cielo estaba increible.

Bueno, de hoy en adelante las fotos serán con una cámara diferente, sólo espero que acostumbrarme a ella no me lleve mucho tiempo.

Day 243

The trees have bloomed again and I found one that really called my attention, not just because of its beautiful flowers but because of the things hanging from it.

These things are known as “Spanish moss”, they aren’t actually moss and they don’t grow in Spain; they are flowering plants that grows upon larger trees.

The spanish moss is currently used for floral arrangements and decoration for handicrafts; but there was a time where it was used as an ingredient in the clay that was used to plaster the inside of houses, and it was also used as the filling for voodoo dolls.

Several bird species  build their nests inside clumps of living Spanish moss, while  some others gather the moss for nesting material.

I had seen the spanish moss several times in my life in different trees, but I had no idea what is was called and what was it used for until today.

The tree is know as Guayacan, for more information about it go to day 138.

Los árboles están florecidos otra vez y encontre uno que realmente me llamó la atención, no sólo por sus flores sino por las cosas que colgaban de él.

Éstas cosas se conocen como “Musgo español”, en verdad no es musgo y no crece en España, es una planta que crece en los árboles grandes.

El musgo español se usa actualmente para los adornos de flores y como decoración en las artesanias, pero hubo una época en la que fue usado como material de construcción, se mezclaba con la arcilla y el barro para revocar las paredes interiores de las casas; también se usó como relleno para los muñecos de voodoo.

Muchas aves contruyen sus nidos dentro de estas matas, y otras cortan partes de ésta para llevarlas a otro árbol y construir su nido.

Muchas veces había visto el musgo español, pero no sabía ni cómo se llamaba ni para qué se utilizaba hasta hoy.
