Taganga: My first big trip of the year

On the 17^th of January a group of good friends and I met in the airport because our first big trip of the year was about to get started.

A couple of months ago we booked the tickets to Santa Marta, a beautiful and nice city in the Colombian coast; but that wasn’t our final destination; from Santa Marta’s airport we took a cab that took us to the town we were going to stay at for one week,  Taganga.

Taganga, also called “Sal si puedes” –which means “Leave if you can”. –  is a picturesque and small fishing village located 15 minutes away from the center of Santa Marta. The village is surrounded by desert mountains covered in natural flora, such as cactus vegetation and shrubs. It’s known as a nice diving destination where many types of fish and corals can be reached by short walks and snorkeling out to corals. We snorkeled several times and I so regretted not having a water camera to capture all the underwater landscape that I got to see there, it really was amazing and very colorful.

The main beach is shared with the harbor. It’s small and half of it has fishing boats, some of them are decorated in a very particular way, some others not; but still it’s a nice beach to swim and to contemplate the stunning sunsets that can be seen in the coast. There are more beaches in Taganga but to get there we had to walk through a path in the mountains that surround the town, the vista from there is quite stunning.

All in all we had an amazing week there; we left Taganga on the 24^th of January. I shot so many photos and I wanted to share some of them with you all; I’ll be uploading more to my flickr in the next days.

El 17 de enero un grupo de amigos y yo nos encontramos en el aeropuerto a eso de las 9 de la mañana, para darle inicio al primer viaje grande del año.

Hace unos meses compramos unos tiquetes hacia Santa Marta, una ciudad grande y muy bonita en la costa.

Santa Marta no era nuestro punto de llegada; desde su aeropuerto tomamos un taxi que nos llevó al lugar donde ibamos a estar toda una semana; Taganga.

Taganga es una pintoresca villa de Pescadores conocida también como “Sal si puedes”, está ubicada a uso 15 minutos del centro de Santa Marta; está rodeada de montañas desérticas con vegetación natural como cactus y diferentes tipos de arbustos. Es conocida como un excelente lugar para bucear porque el agua es clara, y muchos tipos de peces y corales pueden ser vistos con gran facilidad; nosotros fuimos a “caretear” muchas veces, la cantidad de especies de peces es impresionante, tanto que me arrepentí mucho de no haber tenido una cámara de agua para poder captar todo ese paisaje tan colorido que se ve debajo del agua.

La playa principal se comparte con el Puerto, es pequeña y la mitad está llena de botes pesqueros, algunos con una decoración muy particular, otros más sencillos; pero aun así es un buen lugar para nadar y para ver los famosos atardeceres de la costa.

En Taganga hay más playas, pero para llegar a ellas hay que tomar un camino en las montañas, la vista que tiene es espectacular, pues se puede apreciar el pueblo en su totalidad y un mar con un color perfecto.

Tuvimos una excelente semana, llena de buenos momentos y muchas risas; alla tomé muchas fotos y quería compartir algunas con ustedes; en los próximos dias voy a estar subiendo más a flickr, así que estén pendientes.

Nevado del Ruiz

After exactly one month without blogging I’m back!

Truth be told, I miss blogging but I’m definitely not thinking about doing another 365 project, it takes a lot of time and that’s something I lack right now.

One week ago I traveled with my family to another city, when we were on the way, very early in the morning, I got to see something I had wanted to see for a long time; “El nevado del Ruiz”.

It is a volcano located about two hours driving away from my city; it’s composed by many layers of lava and rocks.

The volcano has been active for about two million years, with three major eruptive periods.

On the 13th of november 1985, an eruption buried and destroyed the town named Armero, and caused an estimated 25.000 deaths.  The volcano is part of a national natural park named Los Nevados, that contains several other volcanoes.

The top of Nevado del Ruiz is covered by large glaciers that have retreated significantly since 1985 because of the global warming.

This year, on the first week of July the volcano erupted, forcing authorities to declare a red alert and order the immediate evacuation of about 2000 people out of fear an expanding eruption may cause avalanches; meteorologists said the volcano began erupting lava and spewing ashes and gases, a month after seismic activity within the volcano made authorities declare an orange alert; this eruption caused an ash cloud as high as 9 km and affected Pereira, which is 89,5 km away.

Although the red alert changed, the volcano is still spewing ashes and that’s why you can see the ash cloud coming out of it.

Después de un mes exacto sin bloggear, hoy estoy de regreso.

La verdad, me hace falta escribir y tomar fotos tan seguido como antes, pero tengo muy claro que otro 365 no estará en mis planes por un largo tiempo, se encesita mucha decdicación y mucho tiempo, y eso es precisamente lo que ahora me no tengo.

Hace una semana viajé con mi familia a otra ciudad, y muy temprano durante el camino pude ver algo que hacía mucho tiempo quería ver, “El nevado del Ruiz”.

Es un volcán que está mas o menos a dos horas de Pereira en carro, y está compuesto de muchas capas de lava, ceniza y rocas. Ha estado activo por cerca de dos millones de alis, en los que ha tenido 3 periodos de erupción.

El 13 de noviembre de 1985, después d euna erupción, enterró y destruyó el pueblo de Armero, causando un estimado de 25.000 muertos.

El volcán pertenece al “Parque nacional natural de los nevados”, que está compuesto por otros volcanes.

a cima del nevado está cubierta por nieve y hielo que desde 1985 se ha reducido significativamente debido al calentamiento global.

Este año, durante la primera semana de julio, el volcán hizo erupción, lo que obligó a las autoridades a declarar la alerta roja y a evacuar a 2000 personas por temos de que la erupción pudiera causar una avalancha; los metereólogos dijeron que el volcán inició lanzando cenizas y gases, esto un mes después de registrar alta actividad sísmica por la que las autoridades declararon alerta naranja; esta erupción causó una nube de ceniza que alcanzó los 9,6 kilómetros de altura y afectó ciudades como Pereira, que está a 89,5 kilómetros del volcán.

Aunque la alerta roja cambió, el volcán sigue activo, por eso en la foto se puede ver la nube de ceniza saliendo de él.

Day 363

I came across a beautiful parrot today, it was in a big cage and I approached to it to try to get some pictures.

When he saw me he started asking “Quiere cacao?” which means “Do you want cacao?”, that’s funny, almost all the parrots that I’ve seen in my entire life are able to say that; I remember that a couple of months ago, when Veronica and Matias, my friends from Chile came to Colombia, we went to the zoo, there was a sort of parrot section and when we were walking by it, all the parrots were screaming the very same sentence; I have no clue why is it so famous among the parrot world.

When I got close to the cage, the parrot approached to the camera and tried to bite the lens, then stepped back and asked me again if I wanted cacao; I laughed and it seems he didn’t like it very much because as soon as he heard me laughing, he quickly approached to bite the lens and then walked away from me.

It took me a long time taking this shot, I took over 30 of this kind but the most of them weren’t in focus; this one is the one I liked the most; I got it when a kid came close and started talking to the parrot, the animal stood completely still and stared at the kid, that gave me the chance to get this one.

Hoy me encontré con un loro que estaba en una jaula muy grande, me acerqué a él  para intentar hacer unos acercamientos.

Apenas me vio me preguntó “Quiere cacao?”, es raro, la mayoría de loros que he visto en toda mi vida dicen esa frase; hace unos meses cuando Verónica y Matias, mis amigos de Chile vinieron, fuimos al zoologico y en la sección donde están los loros escuchamos esa frase de casi todos ellos. No tengo ni idea qué tiene de especial esa frase que la hace tan común en el mundo de los loros.

Cuando me acerqué a la jaula y puse el lente cerca, el loro se acercó e intentó morder el lente, luego se alejó y me preguntó otra vez si quería cacao, me reí y al parecer no le gustó porque apenas escuchó mi risa vino rápido a intentar morder el lente otra vez.

Me tomó un buen tiempo y mucho trabajo poder tomar esta foto, porque a parte de que el loro quería morder el lente, se movía de un lado a otro, lo que hacía que el enfoque, totalmente manual, fuera imposible; por fortuna un niño se acercó a la jaula y empezó a hablarle al loro, que parecía hipnotizado y se quedó quieto en la posición perfecta, ese era el momento perfecto para hacer click!

Day 360

It’s been a rainy day in Pereira and I’m kind of sick, so today’s shot is taken at home.

When I walked into the kitchen I found the windows covered with rain; as it already had stopped raining, I approached to open the windows and immediately noticed the reflection of the city on the rain drops.

I tried very hard to capture a sharp photo if one of them, I spent more than 30 minutes in the kitchen and got almost 70 photos, but only 5 of them were decent; the focus is completely manual and is not easy to get the reflections because if you move one millimeter, it will be completely out of focus.

This was my favorite from today.

Hoy ha sido un día de nubes y lluvia en Pereira, y como no me siento muy bien la foto de hoy fue hecha en casa.

Cuando entré a la cocina vi las ventanas llenas de gotas de lluvia, como ya había escampado fui a abrirlas y mientras me acercaba noté el reflejo de la ciudad en las gotas.

Intenté sacar una foto nítida de una de ellas con el reflejo, estuve más de 30 minutos en la cocina y tomé casi 70 fotos, pero de esas sólo 5 me gustaron; el enfoque es completamente manual y esto hace muy dificil captar el reflejo, pues sólo moverse un milímetro causa que el reflejo se desenfoque 100%.

Esta fue mi favorita de hoy.

I found this little insect in the university and when I saw it I fell in love with its colors.

It looks so different to all the insects that I’d seen before and looks like it’s painted, that’s why it caught my attention.

I’m not going to post in the next days because tomorrow I’ll go out of the city and aside my camera I’m sure I’m not gonna have any contact with technology, so, hope you all have a great weekend!

Encontré este insecto en la universidad y apenas lo vi me enamoré de sus colores.

Es un insecto completamente diferente a todos los que había visto alguna vez, parece pintado, y por eso llamó mi atención.

En los próximos dias no voy a publicar nada porque mañana me voy unos dias, y a parte de mi cámara, no voy a tener ningún contacto con la tecnología, así que hasta el domingo que vuelva.

I’ve passed by this building thousand times in my life, there are different things that get reflected on it, but only lately I noticed how on one of its sides the city is reflected.

So, lately I’d been wanting to take this picture but I really don’t like walking in the street with my camera, and as there is a lot of traffic in this part of the city, stopping to shoot isn’t that easy, but today I gave it a try, and I was very lucky because there were no cars at that time, therefore I could stop and take different shots with both of my lenses.

Por este edificio he pasado miles de veces y siempre noto los reflejos de árboles, del cielo y de alguna calle en él, pero iltimamente en uno de sus lados vi como se reflejaba parte de la ciudad.

Hace unos dias había querido tomar esta foto, pero no me gusta salir de la casa caminando con la cámara, y el lugar desde donde se puede tomar es un sitio en el que hay mucho tráfico, así que es dificil parar.

Hoy salí decidido a tomarla, y por fortuna, no venía ningún carro, así que pude parar y tomar varias fotos, incluso con los dos lentes.

Contrary to what I expected, it didn’t rain today, the weather was actually good, a bit chilly in the morning but the afternoon was sunny and kind of warm too.

So, I didn’t experiment anything with rain drops, but I used some water for today’s shot.

I placed some drops on a glass and my intention was reflecting a wooden box painted by my sister a couple of months ago; this was the outcome of the experiment.

Contrario a lo que pensé ayer, hoy no llovió; a decir verdad, el clima estuvo bueno, un poquito frio en la mañana pero por la tarde estuvo soleado y caliente; así que no pude experimentar con gotas de lluvia.

Pero si pude experimentar con agua; puse algunas gotas sobre un vidrio y traté de reflejar una caja de madera que pintó mi hermana hace unos meses; este fue el resultado del experimento.

Today when I finished classes, a good friend called me to tell me that some snow caps were visible at that time, I looked for a place where those snow caps were visible from and when I got there it was too dark already; I got to take some photos, one of them was decent but not whorty of upload becuase is too noisy, I had to bump the ISO up to 6400.

When I was walking to get to the place where I could see the snow caps from, I got this picture, I liked how these two towers look like against the beautiful sunset that we had today.

Hoy cuando terminé clase, recibí una llamada de una amiga para avisarme que los nevados se podian ver facilmente debido a que el cielo estaba despejado.

Eera un poco tarde pero intenté llegar a un punto desde el cual pudiera verlos; cuando llegué ya estaba muy oscuro, se veian, pero no era facil tomarles fotos.

Lo hice, saque una decente, pero ninguna para publicar, todas tienen mucho ruido porque subí el ISO a 6400.

Mientras subía al lugar desde el cual los nevados se veian, alcancé a capturar esta foto, me gustó como las dos torres se ven contra el atardecer que estuvo espectacular.

This little camera that you see here was the first camera that I bought with my own money, I was like 12 years old and I wanted to have a camera to take with me to the school; my parents told me that I should save more money and get a better one, but as soon as I saw this one, I fell in love with it.

It’s dimensions are 56x56x15 millimeters, quite small, when one of my teachers at school first saw it he thought it was a pencil sharpener with the shape of a camera, and he told me that I was quite obsessed with photography.

The quality of the pictures was really bad, but I didn’t know anything about photography at that time and all I wanted was having a camera to capture different moments with my friends at school and family; I was also really obsessed with this camera because the face plate could be changed for a different one with different colors; I still have the 7 of them, the orange one that you see in the picture, and some others; for a 12 years old guy it was very cool.

Nowadays that I know more about photography I know that this camera wasn’t a great choice, but I really don’t regret having had it because this little camera made me want to get a better one and learn more and more about photography.

Esta pequeá cámara fue la primera que compré con mi propia plata, tenía casi 12 años y mis papas me decían que mejor esperara para comprar algo mejor, pero yo quería una en ese momento y no podía esperar más, además, vi esta y me encantó por su tamaño y facilidad de llevar a todas partes.

Mide 56 x 56 x 15 milimetros, es muy pequeña, algún día un profesor del colegio la vio y pensó que era un sacapuntas y que yo estaba obsesionado con la fotografía.

La calidad de las fotos era pésima, ya entiendo porque me decían que esperara, pero igual en ese momento no sabía nada de fotografía y lo único que quería era tomar fotos de mis amigos y familia.

“La camarita” como le deciamos, tenía 7 cubiertas de diferentes colores, la naranja que ven aca, una azul, otra verde, morada, roja, plateada y café, el sólo hecho de tener esa posibilidad de cambiar de colores era algo increible para un niño de 12 años y me hacía sentir tener a razón en cuanto a no esperar para comprar una cámara mejor.

Obviamente ahora sabiendo algo más de fotografía, se que fue una decisión apresurada, pero no me arrepiento en lo absoluto de haberla tenido porque fue en cierto modo la que me hizo querer tener una camara mejor y aprender cosas nuevas cada vez más.

I went to the botanical garden with the intention of finding a green toucan that I saw yesterday in the university; of course it was a silly idea because toucans are usually on the top of the trees and it was gonna be almost impossible to find one, so I wasted my time in the search of the bird.

But anyways, I got to shoot different pictures that I was quite pleased with; when I was about to leave, I shot this one, I didn’t like it that much when I saw it in the camera, but then, when I saw it here I found something magical and charming about it, I don’t know if it has something to do with the silhouettes or perhaps with the sun light coming through the forest; also this shot is different to every picture I’ve posted, that’s why I found it interesting.

Hoy fui al jardín botánico con la intención de encontrar un tucán verde, ayer encontré uno en la universidad y pensé que por el verano podría encontrar uno facilmente; pero normalmente los tucanes están en las copas de los árboles y encontrar uno iba a ser casi imposible, así que por ese lado, perdí el tiempo.

Pero aun así, alcancé a tomar diferentes fotos que me gustaron y con las que estaba contento; cuando estaba a punto de salir tomé esta, al principio la vi muy normal, pero cuando la vi grande en el computador me gustó, encontré algo mágico en ella por sus siluetas y la luz del sol filtrándose por las guaduas; además la vi muy diferente a todo lo que he tomado alguna vez, pero eso me pareció interesante.

Today I met up with a friend in the social area of the building where I live; we were going to practice a bit our presentation until we were confident with it; some minutes later, I noticed a nest very close to where we were sitting and there was a turtle dove  in it, I imagined that she was sitting on her eggs and later on she flew away for a while; we got closer to the nest and got to see 2 eggs there.

Afterwards, the bird came back, and I could get close enough to take some pictures of it; these are the ones I liked the most.

Already in Day 335, only one month to go!

Hoy me reuní con una amiga en la zona social del edificio, para practicar nuestra exposición hasta que sintieramos nos sintieramos confiados en lo que ibamos a decir; después de un vi un nido y una tórtola en él; me imaginaba que estaba sentada sobre huevos.

Más tarde la tórtola se fue y nos acercamos al nido, efectivamente habían dos huevos; la tórtola volvió y me pude acercar lo suficiente para tomarle algunas fotos; estas dos fueron las que más me gustaron.

Día 335, ahora sólo falta un mes!

Day 287

Today I didn’t have a lot of free time, but I still managed to get some pictures, I was walking in the university and heard a bird singing close to me, then I looked carefully in the tree and saw it, a blue-grey tanager, the bird I used to try to catch when I was a little kid. I stayed still, and quietly took my camera out of the bag, then started shooting trying my best to get a decent focus, and this is what I got.

Some facts about the blue-grey tanager

The blue-grey tanager is a medium-sized South American bird.

Its range is from Mexico south to northeast Bolivia On Trinidad and Tobago they are called Blue Jean.

The Blue-grey Tanager is 16-18 cm long and weighs 30-40 grams, adults have a light bluish head and underparts, with darker blue upper parts and a shoulder patch colored a different hue of blue.

Hoy no tuve mucho tiempo para tomar fotos, pero aun así lo hice, y saqué algunas mientras estaba en la universidad. Mientras iba caminando escuché un pájaro cantar, pero el sonido se escuchaba muy cercano, empecé a mirar en un árbol y lo encontré, ahi estaba el azulejo, un pájaro que siempre intenté atrapar cuando estaba pequeño. Me que´de quieto, saqué la cámara y trate de hacer mi mejor esfuerzo para lograr un enfoque decente, esto fue a lo que llegué.

Algunos datos de los azulejos:

El azulejo es un pájaro pequeño originario de Sur América.

Se encuentra desde México hasta el noroeste de Bolivia, mide entre 16-18 centímetros de largo y pesa entre 30-40 gramos. Los adultos tienen la cabeza y las partes inferiores del cuerpo color gris azulado claro, las partes dorsales son azules oscuras, con verde azul brillante en las alas y la cola, y los hombro con diferentes matices de azul.

This is the result of a new experiment with water and light, I used a close-up lens to get the selective focus; this is hand-held and got it using just manual focus.

I was so amazed with this dragonfly, it looks the same as the one I saw in the Amazon a couple of months ago and it’s color really caught my eye; it made run from one to another place just to get a photo of it, at the end, all the effort was worthy.

Some facts about dragonflies:

They have two sets of wings, but they don’t have to beat their wings in unison like other insects do, their front wings can go up while their backs ones are going down.

Dragonflies flap their wings at about 30 beats per second, while the bee flaps them about 300 times per second.

Excellent and strong fliers, they can loop-the-loop, hover, and fly backwards.

In the stage after the hatching, they are called “dragonfly nymphs”, at that time they live in the water for about a year and they eat tiny fish and pollywogs; after leaving the water and becoming flying insects, they only live for about a month.

When they become airborne insects they catch mosquitoes in the air.

Their natural predators are birds.

Dragonflies are often close to water streams because they lay their eggs on or near the water.

Because of their large eyes, the adult dragonfly can see nearly 360 degrees around it at all times.

Estaba encantado con este animal, una libélula, es igual a una que vi en el amazonas hace unos meses, y su color me pareció muy especial para un animal de estos; me hizo correr de un lado a otro para poder tomar una foto desde el ángulo que quería, pero al final, creo que el esfuerzo valió la pena.

Algunos datos sobre las libélulas:

Tienen dos sets de alas, pero no tienen que moverlas al unísono como lo hacen otros insectos, perfectamente pueden mover hacia arriba las de adelante mientras las de atras las mueven para abajo.

Las libélulas baten sus alas aproximadamente 30 veces por segundo, mientras que las abejas alcanzan las 300 veces.

Son fuertes y excelentes voladores, pueden sostenerse en el aire y volar hacia atras.

Después de la etapa de incubación viven en el agua por casi un año, comen pequeños peces y renacuajos; cuando dejan el agua y se convierten en insectos voladores, sólo viven aproximadamente por un mes.

Los pájaros son los predadores de las libélulas.

Se les encuentra cerca de las corrientes de agua porque es ahí donde ponen sus huevos.

Debido a sus largos ojos, una libélula adulta puede ver casi 360 grados .

Hey People!

To me, there is no better way to test a new lens than going out to look for birds.

Today I had the oportunity to see a very small and coloful bird that I’d been looking for; but it’s so small and the green feathers of its wings allow it to camouflage with the tree.

It is known as “Tangara Gyrola”; these birds are about 14 centimeters long, weigh 19.5 grams and can be found in South America, Trinidad, Panama and Costa Rica; they tend to inhabit in forests or humid areas.

These are social birds, usually are found in pairs; they eat fruits and sometimes insects that they take from the underside of branches.

Para mi no hay una mejor forma de probar un nuevo lente que ir a buscar aves.

Hoy encontré un pequeño pájaro que había estado buscando hace un tiempo, pero por su tamaño y por el verde de sus alas se hacía muy dificil porque se camuflan en los árboles.

Se le conoce como tángara cabeciroja, mide aproximadamente unos 14 centímetros, pesa 19,5 gramos y se encuentra en Sudamérica, Panamá, Costa Rica y Trinidad; tienden a encontrarse en los bosques y en las zonas más húmedas.

Son aves muy sociales, casi siempre se encuentran en pareja o pequeños grupos; comen frutas y algunas veces insectos que capturan de la parte inferior de las ramas.

Day 140

Hey Everyone!

Today it’s the 29th of february, the day that only exists every four years.

My cousin wrote to me yesterday, pointing at this is the day that “doesn’t exist” in my project, and he suggested me to do something that symbolizes either infinity or nothing; it was a hard task because this week is full of exams and assignments, but I decided to take the challenge. His suggestion kind of kept me awake last night, I was thinking about something that could represent infinity or nothing, and finally I figured something out.

I thought about posting just a white square, but to me that’s a cliché and definitely ain’t the kind of photography that I’ve been doing, sure it could be something interesting but is more philosophical.

This is my interpretation of infinity, in my opinion the bokeh is something that goes beyond what we see, something that could reach infinity; there are lots of shapes on it that show nothing but at the same time create a powerful atmosphere.

29 de febrero, el día que sólo existe cada cuatro años.

Mi primo me escribió un  correo anoche, recordándome que éste es el día “que no existe en mi proyecto”, y me sugirió a ahcer algo que simbolizara el infinito o la nada. Fue una tarea dificil porque esta semana está llena de examenes y estudio; pero acepté la sugerencia y me reté a hacerlo. Estuve toda la noche pensando en qué podía simbolizar la nada o el infinito, pero al final, algo se me ocurrió.

Al principio pensé en poner una foto completamente en blanco, pero me parece muy típico, y ese no es el tipo de fotos que he venido haciendo, puede ser interesante pero no tiene nada que ver con mi estilo, y me parece además algo más filosófico.

Esta fue mi interpretación de la nada y el infinito, para mi, el bokeh es algo que va más alla de lo que podemos ver, algo que podría llegar al infinito; tiene muchas formas, es nada, y a la vez crea una atmóspera potente sin ser algo definido.

Day 138

Hey People!

In Colombia we don’t have a proper spring, but there are months where the trees start blooming and give us a kind of spring feeling that doesn’t last as long as the normal spring would last, but is a change that makes the city look more beautiful.

This tree is called Guayacan, the scientific name is “Tabebuia chrysantha” and it blooms with yellow flowers in the end of the dry season.  The flowers are from 2.5 to 10 centimeters wide; and the tree grows from 5 to 50 meters.

The colors of the flower depend on the specie of the tree, you can find white, pink, magenta, yellow or red flowers; it doesn’t last very long because the flowers start falling on the ground quickly, and they kind of form a carpet which looks very beautiful and in the evenings gives a kind of european atmosphere.

The south of Florida in the United States, Mexico, the Caribbean Islands, and South America are the places where the tree can be found.

This tree is the national tree of Venezuela and it’s flower is the national flower of Brazil.

En Colombia no tenemos estaciones como tal, pero hay meses donde los árboles florecen  y dan una sensación de primavera, que aunque no dura los 3 meses que dura ésta estación, le da un cambio a la ciudad y la hace ver mucho más bonita.

Uno de estos árboles se conoce como Guayacán, y normalmente florece en el final de la temporada de sequía. Crecen entre 5 y 50 metros, y sus flores están varían entre los 2,5 y 10 centímetros de ancho.

Los colores de las flores dependen de la especie; hay unos que dan flores amarillas, otros rosadas, magenta, lila o rojas; éste espectáculo no dura mucho tiempo porque las flores empiezan a caer rápidamente en el suelo, pero ahí forman una especie de alfombra o tapete que crean una atmósfera muy europea.

El sur de la Florida en Estados Unidos, México, las islas del Caribe y Sudamérica son los lugares donde comunmente se encuentran estos árboles.

El guayacán es el árbol nacional de Venezuela, y su flor es la flor nacional de Brasil.

Hey People!

This is one of the consequences of the land mines.

Land mines are explosive devices that are placed in or on the ground, and they explode when triggered by an operator, or with the proximity of a person, animal or vehicles.

The number of land mines in the world is unknown, but it’s estimated that more than 120 millions of them are buried in the ground in more than 76 countries.

In Colombia, land mines were planted by terrorist groups in different  fields, of course, far away from the cities and mostly in the south of the country, they did it in order to block the access so that they could hide deep down in the jungle and nobody have a way to get to them.

Some of these mined fields are unmarked and therefore, there are lots of peasants or people who live in rural areas far from hospitals, who end up caught in the middle of this conflict. Antipersonnel mines do not distinguish between the army, the guerrillas and the civilians, they just explode while someone is walking close by; they can be active for more than 50 years, even after a conflict has ended.

When these people survive an injury from land mines or anti-personel mines as they are called as well, their lives change a lot, not just because the physical injury but their mental health is affected; I’ve heard that the government support these victims with some money, but this support shouldn’t be meassured in money but in the emotional help to the person who survived and to their families.

It’s estimated that about one 24.000 people are killed or maimed by land mines every year, which is 1 person every 15 minutes.

Because of the land mines, in Cambodia there is one amputee per 384 inhabitants while in the USA there is one per 22000.

Last year the countries with the most landmines in the world were Egypt, Iran, Angola, Afghanistan, Iraq, Cambodia, Kuwait, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Mozambique and Somalia; two years ago, Afghanistan was the first one, it’s reduced the number of landmines a lot, and so has Colombia and Pakistan, which were the second and third country in 2010.

Esta es una de las consecuencias de las minas anti personas en este país.

Estas minas son artefactos explosivos puestos en la tierra o bajo ella, y explotan cuando son disparadas por un operador, o simplemente con la proximidad de una persona, un animal o un vehículo.

El número de minas anti persona en el mundo es incierto, pero se estima que hay mas de 120 millones de ellas enterradas en 76 paises.

En Colombia, las minas anti personas han sido palntadas por grupos terroristas en diferentes campos del país, sobre todo en la parte sur cerca a la selva para así bloquear el acceso del ejercito, poder adentrarse en la selva y evitar ser capturados facilmente.

Algunos de estos campos minados no están marcados, por eso, muchos campesinos o personas que viven en áreas rurales lejos de hospitales, terminan siendo victimas de un conflicto del cual no tienen la culpa; éstas minas no distinguen entre guerrilleros, militares, civiles, niños, ancianos o mujeres, simplemente se activan cuando hay alguien cerca, y de esta forma acaban con una vida, o dejan secuelas irreparables. Lo más peligroso de todo es que las minas pueden estar activas por al rededor de 50 años, aun cuando el conflicto por el cual fueron plantadas haya terminado.

Los sobrevivientes de las minas anti personas tienen un cambio de vida repentino, no sólo por el impacto físico generado por la explosión, sino porque su salud mental se ve afectada también; he escuchado que el gobierno apoya a las victimas con algo de dinero, pero la ayuda brindada no debería ser medida en pesos, sino en apoyo emocional a las víctimas y a sus familias.

Se estima que cerca de 24.000 personas mueren o son mutiladas debido a las minas anti personas cada año, lo cual nos da una persona cada 15 minutos.

En Camboya hay una persona  por cada 384 habitantes a la que se le ha tenido que amputar algún miembro de su cuerpo por una explosión de mina anti persona, mientras que en Estados Unidos, hay una entre 22000.

El año pasado, los paises con más minas anti persona en el mundo fueron: Egipto, Iran, Angola, Afganistan, Iraq, Camboya, Kuwait, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Mozambique y Somalia; hace dos años, Afganistan ocupaba el primer lugar, pero se ha logrado reducir el numero de minas en ese pais, así como en Colombia y Pakistan, que en el 2010 ocupaban el segundo y tercer lugar respectivamente .

Day 123

Hi People!

Today I went to have lunch with my family in a small town not too far away from my city; there is a valley beside the town and it is one of the biggest landmarks in Colombia.

The name is name is Cocora Valley and is located in the center of the Andean mountains.

It’s name comes from the Quimbayan culture, Cocora was the name of a quimbayan princess and it means “Star of water”.

This is the main location of the national tree of Colombia, the wax palm; there are also lots of different animals and types of flowers to see; the landscape is absolutely breathtaking.

I wanted to show the wax palms on the top of a mountain with fog, and some other day when I go back and the weather is better, make a panorama of the landscape so you can see how is it like.

It’s unbelievable that I’ve been to Salento (the town close to the valley” countless times and I had never gone to the valley before. It’s a place that I highly recommend to visit if you get the chance.

Hoy fui a almorzar con mi familia en un pueblo pequeño, no muy lejos de mi ciudad; cerca a Salento, el pueblo del que hablo, hay un valle que es uno de los paisajes más importantes y atractivos de Colombia.

Se llama Cocora, está ubicado en la parte central de la coordillera de los Andes, y su nombre viene del nombre de una princesa quimbaya; el significado de la palabra Corcora es “estrella de agua”.

Es el principal lugar de l árbol nacional de Colombia, la palma de cera; además hay una gran variedad de fauna y flora para ver. El paisaje es de sueño!

Es increible que viviendo tan cerca, nunca hubiera ido a este lugar, es definitivamente un sitio que todos deben conocer.

Day 122

Hey People!

It’s been such a long and tiring week, but today I went to the university again… not to study, but to take some photos.

I wanted to do something really different, like, photograph people doing something they do in their daily lives, and I knew I could find some people there; what I didn’t know was that there is a lot going on in the university.

I found some guys practicing their juggling skills, people laid on the grass reading books, some others painting, and finally I found this guy playing his conga in a kind of small forest outside the faculty of arts.

I sat for a while just to listen, a while later, I took courage to ask him if I could photograph him, I prefer asking because I’ve heard there is a lot of people who get really upset; but he didn’t have any trouble and kept on playing.

I enjoyed a lot the experience of going out to see what people is doing in their daily lives, talking to them, listening different stories beucase I think there is always somehting new that you can learn from others, and I think I will do it more often.

Esta semana ha sido muy larga y agotadora, aún así, hoy volví a la universidad… No a estudiar sino a tomar fotos!

Quería hacer algo diferente, como fotografiar gente y lo que hacen en su vida cotidiana, sabía que la universidad era un buen lugar para ver todo tipo de gente, pero nunca me imaginé que alla sucedieran tantas cosas.

Encontré gente acostada en el pasto leyendo un libro, otros practicando malabares, mucha gnete pintando, dibujando, y al final encontré a alguien tocando la conga en un pequeño bosque fuera de la facultad de artes.

Me senté un rato a escucharlo, y depsués de un rato, me armé de valor y me acerqué para preguntarle si podía tomarle fotos fotos mientras tocaba, muchas veces prefiero preguntar porque hay gente que se disgusta, pero el no tuvo ningún problema, aceptó y siguió tocando.

Disfruté mucho la experiencia de ver y fotografiar cosas cotidianas que hace la gente, además de interactuar con ellos un rato porque siempre se aprenden cosas nuevas de cada uno; creo que lo voy a hacer más seguido.

Hey!

I’ve been a big fan of all kinds of art; since I was a kid I liked painting and drawing a lot, specially colorful and geometrical things.

Mosaic is one of styles of art that I’ve liked the most, probably because I’ve seen my aunt doing it a lot, she  collects the tile, stones and broken pieces of plates, mugs, anything; afterwards she designs something with them; I gotta say that it ain’t an easy task, but all the effort put on it is worthy.

Today I found this mosaic in the university, I shot some photos of it but I didn’t have any intention to upload any photo of a mosaic today, but then, when I saw them in the computer I liked them, specially this one because you can see so many things there, and interpretate it as you feel like; the first time I saw it I thought about a landscape with rivers and mountains, but maybe someone can see a city seen from above, anything… what’s your interpretation of this?

Desde muy pequeño me ha gustado el arte en todos sus tipos; me gusta mucho dibujar y pintar, especialmente cosas coloridas y con mucha geometría.

Los mosaicos son una parte del arte que me ha interesado y gustado muchísimo, probablemente porque he visto cómo mi tía los hace, desde que empieza a recolectar piedras, baldosas, platos y vasos partidos, y luego empieza a diseñar algo con estas pequeñas piezas; es muy interesante y como trabajo es admitrable, pues es muy complicado cortar cada baldosa para darle la forma perfecta para que encaje y hasta pensar en cosas tan simples como hacer que los colores combinen bien.

Hoy en la universidad encontré este mosaico, le tomé algunas fotos pero sin intención alguna de subirla al blog, simplemente cuando las vi en el computador me gustaron, especialemente esta, por todas las posibilidades de interpretación que da; la primera vez se me parecía a un paisaje con montañas y rios,  pero para alguien más puede ser una ciudad vista desde el aire, puede ser cualquier cosa. ¿Qué interpretan ustedes aca?

Day 119

Hey!

Today on my way to the university I saw this small and colorful trailer where they sell alcohol shots in the weekends, immediately its colors caught my eye, but anyway, I couldn’t stop because it was raining a lot and I was kind of running late for the class, so I thought about going there some other day to take some photos. But when the class finished, I couldn’t resist to go back there again and shoot.

I really liked the atmosphere of the place, there were some constructions around and that’s why you see the sand and all these guadua sticks; I also wanted to change a bit the subject of my phoptos, I’ve been doing a lot of nature photography lately, and I can’t deny that I love it, but a change is refreshing once in a while.

Hoy, en el camino a la universidad, encontré este pequeño y colorido trailer donde venden shots los fines de semana, inmediatamente sus colores me llamaron la atención, pero estaba lloviendo y tenía que llegar a clase rápido, así que pensé en dejarlo como una opción para tomar fotos otro día. Pero cuando la clase se terminó, no pude resistir las ganas de ir y sacar algunas fotos.

Me gustó no sólo el trailer sino la atmósfera del lugar, hay varias construcciones cerca y por eso se ven todas esas guaduas y la arena; además quería cambiar el tema de las fotos, ultimamente he tomado muchas de naturaleza, y no niego que me encanta, pero un cambio puede ser refrescante de vez en cuando.

Day 118

Hi Everybody!

I’ve been taking the camera to the university because it makes easier finding subjects for this project.

Today I found this spider, and I’ve always been curious about their webs because it’s quite amazing how an animal, as small as a spider can build something so big as a spider web can be.

I looked up on the internet and found some interesting information about spider webs:

Depending on the specie of the spider, spider webs have different purposes, such as trapping insects, catching their prey, storing food and building egg sacs.

Spider’s silk is so strong that it is used to make fish net, some silk strands are even stronger than steel strands of the same thickness. Every strand is about 0.003 mm thick.
Spider webs and cobwebs are not the same, spider webs are being used while the cobwebs are webs that have been abandoned.

Spiders have something called spinneret glands, they are used to produce silk and are located in the spider’s abdomen. Each gland produces a thread for a special purpose.

Spiders can produce 3-7 different kinds of silks and each has a different use.

Hoy encontré esta telaraña, ellas siempre me han causado curiosidad porque es raro que un animal tan pequeño pueda construir algo tan resistente y tan grande. Busqué algo de información sobre telarañas y hay cosas que son asombrosas y nunca había escuchado.

Dependiendo de la especie de la araña, las telarañas tienen propósitos diferentes, como capturar insectos, atrapar a su presa,almacenar comida y construir bolsas para sus huevos.

La seda de la araña es tan ferte que puede ser usada para construir redes de pescar, algunas hebras son más fuertes que hebras de acero del mismo grosor, que es aproximadamente de 0.003 mm.

Las arañas tienen unas glándulas localizadas en su abdomen de donde proviene la seda; cada una de éstas glándulas produce un tipo especial de hilo que tiene un uso diferente. Las arañas pueden producir entre 3 y 7 tipos de seda.

Day 117

Hi Everybody!
Today my classes started again, so I’ll be kind of busy in the next month, but sure I’ll keep up with my work for this blog 🙂

I’m not really into plants and flowers photos, that doesn’t mean that I can’t give them a try; and that’s what I did today; I found this little plant and its colors called my attention.

I laid on the ground and focused the small plant; but I had not realized that the background was so colorful and that is what I like the most in this picture, because it makes the small plant stand out.

Hoy empecé de nuevo en la universidad, así que voy a estar un poco ocupado estudiando, pero prometo que voy a seguir con el proyecto 😉

A decir verdad, no soy muy fanático de las fotos de flores y plantas, pero eso no significa que no me gusten algunas y que no pueda intentar sacar algunas; hoy lo intenté, mientras iba caminando vi una planta muy pequeña, no se exactamente qué es, pero sus colores me llamaron mucho la atención.

Saqué la cámara, me acosté en el suelo, enfoqué la planta y me encontré con un fondo desenfocado lleno de colores, que al final me gustó más que la misma planta porque la hace resaltar.

Day 115

Hi Everybody!

Yesterday I wasn’t able to post anything because I was away, I went to my uncle’s house with some friends for the weekend, it was fun and relaxing; we were walking in the mountains for hours, swimming in the river, looking for different animals, we actually saw so many birds but they were flying from one to another branch, so it wasn’t easy to capture them.

When we were about to arrive to my uncle’s house, we saw the blue-crowned motmot, yes, the bird that I tried to find for long time and I found a couple of weeks ago; he wasn’t far away from us, but I wanted to be closer, so I trespassed a fence and started getting closer, he didn’t seem scared at all, I was very close to it, I think about 50 cm away from him, taking some photos, and he didn’t move at all; I think I could have got closer, but I was kind of afraid that somebody would get angry at me for being in private property, so I left the place and as soon as I did, the bird flew away.

It was very nice to see him so close; also in this picture you can see more the details on his face, the old shot in day 106 -where you can find information about the bird- has got a good focus but the bird wasn’t as close as in this one.

Ayer no pude poner ninguna foto porque estuve lejos de la ciudad, de la tecnología, pero no de mi cámara. Fui a la casa de mi tio con unos amigos a pasar el fin de semana, fue muy relajante y divertido, estuvimos caminando por las montañas, nadando en un rio, buscando diferentes animales y vimos muchos pájaros, aunque volaban de una rama a otra muy rápido y era muy dificil capturarlos en fotos.

Antes de llegar a la casa de mi tio, vimos el barranquero, si, ese pájaro que tanto busqué y encontré hace unas semanas.

No estaba muy lejos, pero yo quería acercarme más, así que decidí cruzar una cerca de alambres y acercarme lo que más pudiera; llegué a estar muy cerca, calculo que a unos 50 centímetros del pájaro, y el no se veia asustado en lo absoluto, no se movía pero algunas veces me miraba; creo que hubiera podido acercarme más pero me asustaba que alguien saliera y se molestara por verme en propiedad privada, así que me fui, y apenas pasé la cerca, el pájaro voló hacia un árbol.

fue muy chévere estar tan cerca de él; además aca pueden ver muy bien los detalles en su cara, la foto que tengo del día 106 -donde pueden encontrar información del pájaro- está enfocada, pero el barranquero no se ve tan cerca como aca.

This is one of the most spontaneous shots that I’ve taken for this project, I was in a place full of nature and just saw this leaf and took a photo of it, because the lines were very catchy, and when I saw it bigger in the computer, I liked how it came out, mostly because of its composition.

Day 94

Hi Everybody!

Today I tried something quite new to me; smoke photography.

Some months ago I saw some photos of it and I had no idea of how they were made, so I started to read a tutorial; it was very complete because you could see how to make these photos step by step; I didn’t start practicing after I read the tutorial because I didn’t have enough time but today I decided to give it a try; unfortunately I couldn’t find the guide anymore, so I experimented using everything I could remember from it.

In order to make the photos that you see I had to put up a black background so that I could capture the contrast between the smoke and it; and then, placed some incense about 15 cm away from the background, turn it on with a candle and then the smoke started to flow.

I had to step back to find an angle in which I could see the smoke against the background and start shooting, of course I had to avoid photographing the uncovered parts of the wall and the incense.

I realize that what you need the most aside the camera is patience, because the smoke tends to move from one side to another, and that makes manual focus really hard.

I was completely amazed seeing all the shapes that the smoke forms in the air, its details and how it moves. To some people it might sound very very strange, but smoke can be really beautiful, you don’t believe that until you experience and see what I saw through the view finder.

I’ll keep on reading about this so I can improve more and get better with the focus, which is what I consider the hardest in this kind of photos.

Hoy quise hacer algo que jamás había intentado; fotografía de humo.

Hace algunos meses leí un tutorial muy completo sobre cómo hacer este tipo de fotos, explicaban paso por paso que se debía hacer para obtener buenos resultados, aunque aclaraban que hay muchas formas y la que ellos explicaban no era la única. Por falta de timepo, no pude intentar hacerlas en ese momento, pero hoy decidí que habia llegado la hora de probar qué resultado podía obtener. Desafortunadamente, no volví a encontrar el mismo tutorial, así que hoy experimenté con lo que me acordaba de él.

Primero, puse un fondo negro contra la pared para así captar el contraste del humo con el negro, y sus detalles; luego puse una barra de incienso a unos 15 centímetros de la pared, la prendí y el humo comenzó a salir.

Después busqué un ángulo desde el cual pudiera ver el humo contra el fondo negro, obviando la pared y la vela.

Aprendí que lo más necesario para este tipo de fotos es tener mucha paciencia, porque el humo empieza  amoverse de un lado a otro y eso hace que el enfoque sea casi imposible.

Fue increible ver todas las figuras que el humo forma en el aire; y si, para muchos puede sonar extraño algo así, pero uno sólo lo cree hasta que lo ve a través de la cámara.

Voy a seguir leyendo y practicando un poco más este tipo de fotos, para mejorar, sobre todo en el enfoque que es lo que considero más complicado.

Day 20

I have to be honest and make clear that this photo wasn’t taken today, but almost, it was nearly midnight when I shot this, and I needed to post this as today’s photo because I don’t know when I’m gonna have this opportunity again: It was Halloween, the traffic was chaotic, there was a lot of people in the streets with different costumes and that made the traffic even worse; so the city was just a mess…

Could it be any worse?

Yes. Late in the night there was a black-out, so the traffic-lights stopped working and Pereira was just a huge chaos, and, as I like long exposure shots I decided to make a photo of this “beautiful mess”.

So, I set my camera in Bulb mode in which the shutter stays open only until the shutter button is released; in order to avoid moving I used a tripod and I had to stay still while holding the button, so the picture wasn’t coming out blurred.

I kept it pressed for 255 seconds (more than 4 minutes); and as the shutter is open, it catches all the light trails made by the cars.

My next 20 posts are gonna be in Spanish, my idea is that everyone can understand at least part of this project, so I’ll write 20 in english, then 20 in spanish.
